Making Motherhood Work Book Review GUIDELINES:

Goal(s): Students will write a review of the book Making Motherhood Work which compares work-family policy approaches between the United States, Italy, Germany and Sweden and the ways in which working mothers navigate work and family in these countries.

Students should focus 2/3 of the review in summarizing the main findings of the book. Students should focus on discussing the various policy approaches in the four countries and what strains, if any, working mothers in these countries experience and why.

The last 1/3 of the review should be spent discussing how the findings of the book relate to material presented in class. In particular, students should focus on whether the findings are consistent/inconsistent with course material or whether they add new information/perspectives previously undiscussed.

References: Students are required to provide in-text citations (e.g., page number) when referencing material from the book in their review. Students must provide a citation in all cases, not only when using direct quotes. Students are also asked to provide citations when referencing course material in their discussion. This can include course texts, supplemental readings, or lecture slides. Students will include a reference page at the end of the paper.

Format: Your paper should be ~8 pages (no less than 6.5; no more than 9; excluding reference page) one-sided, double-spaced, using Times New Roman, 12pt font, with standard 1” margins. Students should use either APA or MLA format for citations using the page number when appropriate.
