Dr. David Ansel is a local physician who has worked at Rush, Cook County and Mt. Sinai hospitals - all located on the west side of Chicago.  In 2017 he wrote the book “The Death Gap”.  He states “tens of thousands of Americans die too early.  These early deaths are not random events.  These deaths strike particular individuals who live in particular American neighborhoods.  While we know that people die of cancer, heart disease and so on, this killer is one that we cannot treat with drugs, therapy, or surgery.  This killer is inequality".  

What do you think Dr. Ansel means by this statement and how has this been evident in the experience of Covid-19 in this country? (Please support your response with evidence, links to articles and/or other resources)

Many times, we overlook the evidence and importance of public health efforts in our communities, however the evidence is all around us. Public health has been responsible for many improvements in health outcomes over the past century and, as we can see from our experience with Covid-19, it is a vital component of health care systems. This learning activity is to function as an introduction to the many faces of public health in our communities.

After viewing the video “What is Public Health” below, go on a scavenger hunt to find your own examples of public health in your community (billboards, signs, newspaper articles etc). Post PICTURES. Add a description of the picture and why you think this is a good example of public health. OPEN YOUR EYES!! It's ALL around us!!
