Assignment: Personal Leadership Philosophies

Many of us can think of leaders we have come to admire, be they historical figures, pillars of the industry we work in, or leaders we know personally. The leadership of individuals such as Abraham Lincoln and Margaret Thatcher has been studied and discussed repeatedly. However, you may have interacted with leaders you feel demonstrated equally competent leadership without ever having a book written about their approaches.

What makes great leaders great? Every leader is different, of course, but one area of commonality is the leadership philosophy that great leaders develop and practice. A leadership philosophy is basically an attitude held by leaders that acts as a guiding principle for their behavior. While formal theories on leadership continue to evolve over time, great leaders seem to adhere to an overarching philosophy that steers their actions.

What is your leadership philosophy? In this Assignment, you will explore what guides your own leadership.

To Prepare:

· Identify two to three scholarly resources, in addition to this Module’s readings, that evaluate the impact of leadership behaviors in creating healthy work environments.

· Reflect on the leadership behaviors presented in the three resources that you selected for review.

· Reflect on your results of the CliftonStrengths Assessment, and consider how the results relate to your leadership traits.

The Assignment (2-3 pages):

Personal Leadership Philosophies

Develop and submit a personal leadership philosophy that reflects what you think are characteristics of a good leader. Use the scholarly resources on leadership you selected to support your philosophy statement. Your personal leadership philosophy should include the following:

· A description of your core values

· A personal mission/vision statement

· An analysis of your CliftonStrengths Assessment summarizing the results of your profile

· A description of two key behaviors that you wish to strengthen

· A development plan that explains how you plan to improve upon the two key behaviors you selected and an explanation of how you plan to achieve your personal vision. Be specific and provide examples.

· Be sure to incorporate your colleagues’ feedback on your CliftonStrengths Assessment from this Module’s Discussion 2.

My Discussion & Clifton Strengths Assessment

As a child I grew up in a family who always supported me and gave me the freedom to make my own decisions, no matter what are the obstacles or the complex situation, I will be able to manage all of the variables, aligning and realigning them.

As I did the assessment, I was sure of my strengths where I was actually not shocked about the results and I was aware of them.

In my opinion, my two core values are responsible and achiever. Many people have told me that they actually trust me because I am responsible and this began when I was a young boy. And as for achiever, I do not like quitting. Many people reach a point in their lives where they think to themselves that they are unable to continue and the word QUIT is the solution. Many times I came to that point, but I always keep reminding myself that I am able and capable of doing what I want and by putting my mind in to it.

My two strengths I may consider are positivity and learner. I am a very positive person, I always think positive because negativity will lead me no where. I always try to spread some of my positivity to the people around me. As a matter of fact, I always use a phrase where I always tell it to my wife, family and friends, “Move with the flow and let it lead you to the path where you need to be”. Another strength is learner; learning to me is the key to life and to success. No matter what is the subject and it is new to me, I love learning and exploring thing I do not know about.

Two characteristics that I would like to strengthen are relationship building and adaptability. With relationship building, I would like to develop a strong relationship with different organizations, which will help me in my program and my job as a home care nurse. It is very important to have trust when it comes to relationship building, this can be with patients, employees and even directors. If people yet to trust each other and their leaders, they will be able to work through disagreements, take smarter risks, work harder and contribute better ideas for the future. On the other hand, I have adaptability is another area which I have to focus on. It is the quality of being able to adjust to new conditions. A perfect example of this would be at my job, sometimes I come to situations where I have a person shadowing me and training to start on their own. I sometimes find it hard and it holds me back because I am used to working at a fast paced. Therefore, I need to keep reminding myself that work involves a leader who is willing to give an extra time to teach and give. So in other words, everything will be ok and relax.

Results of my Clifton Assessment:

1) Arranger- People exceptionally talented in the Arranger theme can organize, but they also have a flexibility that complements this ability. They like to determine how all of the pieces and resources can be arranged for maximum productivity.

2) Responsibility- People who are especially talented in the Responsibility theme take psychological ownership of what they say they will do. They are committed to stable values such as honesty and loyalty.

3) Positivity- People who are especially talented in the Positivity theme have an enthusiasm that is contagious. They are upbeat and can get others excited about what they are going to do.

4) Achiever- People who are especially talented in the Achiever theme have a great deal of stamina and work hard. They take great satisfaction from being busy and productive.

5) Learner- People who are especially talented in the Learner theme have a great desire to learn and want to continuously improve. In particular, the process of learning, rather than the outcome, excites them.

Feedback from colleague

Great discussion points Ashraf!! I want to say that the upbringing you had prepared you so well for the challenges of today. You know who you are and what you are capable of. You and I share the Positivity strength theme. People who are positive are upbeat, they see the positive in any situation and in the people, and they work with. According to Gallup Clifton Strength Themes, leaders with positive outlook have contagious enthusiasm, which attracts people, and allow them to provide their support in any given project. (Gallup Clifton Strengths, 2019). I believe this is a strong leadership trait as no leader can lead on their own. They require people who share the same vision and are enthusiastic about achieving good outcomes and the set goals. That’s what a leader with a positive outlook can do. Positive teams are Productive teams; when people feel appreciated, they become more confident and productive (CDF Capital, n.d.). We need such leaders in our organization to prevent staff burnout and high turnover. Our patients likewise, need providers with positive attitude, which facilitates quick recovery and adherence to treatment regimen.
