Assignment 4: Editing Sequences – Narrative and Split-Column

Your next assignment is to write 2 very short scripts, one in each format, using the concepts of montage (video editing) to convey your message.

Both the narrative script and the split-column script must contain:

· One scene in which the editing pace is clearly designated, “slow” and appropriate to the action; i.e. where there are fewer shots per minute than average (according to assigned reading), and which has a non-cut transition to the next scene

· One scene in which the editing pace is clearly designated, “fast” and appropriate to the action; i.e. where there are more shots per minute than average, and which has a non-cut transition to the end of the piece

Keep in mind, as discussed in class, that the split column may state these EXPLICITLY, while the narrative must state them IMPLICITLY.

Each scene in both scripts must contain the following elements:

· The scene must begin with action, not dialogue

· The scene description must describe where the action is taking place, following the “Goldilocks rule”

· The scene description must describe the characters who appear for the first time in the scene, following the “Goldilocks rule”

· At least one character must perform one action in the scene description that reveals something about the character

· At least one character must speak at least one line of dialogue that reveals something about the character

· The scene must have a significant lighting change that conveys a message about the scene

Finally, your story within the script should be based on the following premise:

A product like the one pictured below…

… is encountered by at least 2 of the following public domain characters, one from Column A and one from Column B.

Column A

Column B

King David

Prince Jonathan

Peter the Apostle

Paul the Apostle

Mary (sister of Lazarus)

Martha (sister of Lazarus)

Juliet

Romeo

Macbeth

Lady Macbeth

Maid Marian

Robin Hood

Dr. John H. Watson

Sherlock Holmes

You may “mix and match” characters: in other words, you need not pair a character from column A with her or his companion from the original texts. Also, you need not use the same characters in the narrative script and in the split-column script.

The only other restrictions on your scripts are:

· They must tell a story with clear beginning, middle, and end.

· They must be properly formatted.

· They must present the product in a positive light.

· Your target page count for this assignment is 2 pages per script (2 pages narrative, 2 pages split-column).
