COMP7041 Virtualisation Technologies Assignment 3 - 2019-20 Semester 2

You have been tasked with migrating an existing physical server infrastructure to a virtualized infrastructure.

An initial analysis of the physical infrastructure has identified the servers that can be migrated to virtual machines and run on Hypervisors.

You are required to come up with a design that will facilitate the migration to a virtual infrastructure.

To do this you need to identify the following:

1. The number of Hypervisors required:

i. To run the virtual machines without any spare capacity

ii. To run the virtual machines with 40% spare capacity

iii. To provide High Availability for all virtual machines 25 Marks

2. The amount of memory (RAM) consolidation that can be safely achieved. Then, use this to calculate how much memory will be required for each Hypervisor. 10 Marks

3. The cost savings in terms of the power required to run the Hypervisors versus the physical servers over a year (Given that each server consumes 500w of power, requires 500w of cooling, and electrical power costs 10c per kilowatt-hour). 15 Marks

4. The requirements for the shared storage environment.

This involves identifying:

i. The number of hard disks required to store the virtual machine files

ii. How the virtual machine files can be protected against disk failure

iii. The number of hard disks after the protection mechanism has been implemented

iv. The cost of the overall shared storage solution 25 Marks

5. A sample diagram of the proposed infrastructure (include Hypervisors, shared storage and network infrastructure). As well as this you should give a detailed description of the components shown in the diagram 25 Marks

Case Study Specification:

To assist you in this process you have been provided with the following information:

· There are 100 physical servers that are to be migrated to virtual machines

· Of the 100 machines:

· 76 are non-clustered with 15% CPU utilization and 8GB of RAM (@10% utilization) per server

· 24 are clustered with 12% CPU utilization and 8GB of RAM (@15% utilization) per server and must support peak loads 2x higher

· All 100 machines have the same basic storage configuration of a single 30 GB hard disk for the operating system that the server would boot from and a second 200 GB hard disk that was used for the server’s data.

· The shared storage solution will use 1TB enterprise hard disk drives

· The cost of each 1 TB enterprise disk for the SAN is €1000

Deliverable by Friday 7th May 2021 at 23:59pm and will have to be posted to the Assignments folder on Canvas – the module is Virtualization Technologies COMP7041)

The document should be produced in a word processing package such as MS Word. The font should be size 10, Arial, and 1.5 spacing.

Include

· a title page containing the title of your report with your name, student number, title of the course and module

· an introduction page which briefly introduces your topic and a summary of what the document contains.

· A table of contents of the case study

· Each section of case study answered

Marking Guidelines

This assignment will count as 25% of your final mark in this module. Marks awarded will be calculated based on the quality of research conducted by students and on the completeness, consistency and accuracy of the final report. The report should include a table of contents, bibliography, referencing and a diagram of the architecture.

Submissions received on or before the deadline will be marked out of the full 25%. Submissions received within one week of the deadline will be marked out of 20%. These will have to be submitted by email as the Canvas System will prevent submission after the time allotted. No submissions will be accepted thereafter.
