Assignment I: Argument (3-4 pages – excluding cover page – double-spaced, 12-point font) 10% of the course.

• Read one of the five articles listed bellow and provide an analysis of its argument. Your paper will be graded on the following bases:

1. Identify the major premise or the central argument (15%)

2. Identify minor premises or the ground the author provides to support the central argument, and identify the conclusion. If you think there is no conclusion, articulate your reasons (20)

3. Causation: Has the author used causation? If yes, identify the independent and dependent variables. If you do not see any causation explain your reasons (15%)

4. What method of argumentation is used: induction or deduction? Explain your reasons on why you think it is either induction or deduction (15%)

5. Evaluate the argument: Your evaluation should be a response to two questions: 1) Are minor premises relevant to the major premise? 2) Is the argument valid? 3) Explain your reasons in responses to the two questions. (20%)

6. Conclusion: conclude in one paragraph your findings by explaining whether the argument make sense for you or not and why. In your explanation, concentrate on how the argument (major and minor premises) logically lead to a true conclusion? (15%)

• Organize your paper in an essay style (introduction, discussion, conclusion): 1) Introduce the article and the central argument. 2) Highlight major and minor premises and the conclusion. 3) discuss the causation and argumentation. 4) Evaluate the argument. 5) Provide a conclusion.

• Papers should include a cover page with your name, student number, the PSCI 2701B, and your tutorial number

• All pages should be numbered

• Use one of the three citation styles: MLA, APA, or Chicago Manual of Style. You can choose any of them, but you must use it consistently in your paper.
