Recommending a Fair Way to Assign Work around the Holidays
Assume that you are part of a small group that comprises your organization’s Labor-Management Committee. This e-mail arrives from the general manager.
Subject: Allocating Holiday Hours
As you know, lots of people want to take extra time off around the holidays to turn three-day weekends into longer trips. But we do need to stay open. Right now, there are allegations that some supervisors give the time off to their friends. But even “fair” systems, such as giving more senior workers first choice at time off, or requiring that workers with crucial skills work, also create problems. We possibly need a different system around Christmas, when many people want to take off a week or more, than around lesser holidays, when most people only take a day or two.
Please recommend an equitable way to decide how to assign hours.
Consider: How best to assign hours and Support your recommendation in an email or Memorandum to the committee.
