Note: Your work should be individual effort and no collaboration/group work is allowed. Problem 1:

a) List types of glass fibers and identify the two most commonly used glass fibers in structural applications.

b) List the properties [specific gravity, tensile strength, Young’s modulus, compressive strength, shear modulus, longitudinal thermal expansion co-efficient (x10-6 0F)] of glass fiber composites.

Problem 2:

a) List types of carbon fibers and identify the most commonly used carbon fibers in structural applications.

b) List the properties [specific gravity, tensile strength, Young’s modulus, compressive strength, shear modulus, longitudinal thermal expansion co-efficient (x10-6 0F)] of carbon fiber composites.

Problem 3: Plot idealized stress-strain curves of typical unidirectional composites (given below) in the fiber direction along with steel and aluminum. Use strain axis up to 6% (or 60,000 micro-strain) and stress axis up to 600 ksi.

i) E-glass epoxy or S-glass epoxy ii) carbon epoxy or graphite epoxy iii) Kevlar (aramid) epoxy iv) Aluminum v) Steel.

Give 4 common examples for each. Problem 5: In a table, list typical properties (tensile and compressive strength, modulus of elasticity, shear modulus, and percent elongation) of polyester, vinylester, epoxy, ABS, polycarbonate, and PVC. Problem 6: List advantages and disadvantages of glass, carbon, and aramid FRP composites.
