Reading Across Media - Using Ch. 3

You are currently working on a project that asks you to read and understand sources. In fact, reading sources (like articles, books, and websites) in order to understand their argument is something you are going to do all semester. This assignment is meant to help give you strategies for doing that effectively. You may use these skills as you complete your Unit 1 project, but also as you look for more sources in Unit 2.

Step 1: For this activity, you should first read "Reading Across Media" on pages 33-38 of our textbook.

Step 2: Then, respond to the following prompt. You will upload your response as a Microsoft Word doc or docx file or PDF.

• The reading contains 5 different sub-sections: Reading Visual Texts, Reading Print Texts, “Reading” Spoken Texts, Reading Digital Texts, and Reading On- and Off-Screen. Write a brief summary of the main ideas included in each of these sub-sections.

• Think about your experiences interacting with visual texts, print texts, spoken texts, and digital texts. Of these, which do you feel the most confident reading and understanding? Which do you feel the least confident reading and understanding? Share at least one experience you’ve had that you think contributes to these feelings.

• If your ENC 1102 class does not have time to work with all of these types of texts, which one(s) do you think should definitely be included and which one(s) could be disregarded? Why do you feel this way? As you think about your response here, think specifically about what it means to communicate in today’s digital age and the skills that you think are important for college students to develop.

• What is one idea you learned from this assignment that you might apply towards texts you will use for your research project this semester?
