News Essay (12.5% of total course grade)

Due: week 5

News Essay maps to the following WMST 200 learning outcomes (course objectives):

· analyze gender as a social, historical, and cultural construction rather than as a natural biological fact in order to challenge stereotypes and to create alternatives to current constructions of power and inequality

· identify differences among women and women's multiple, intersecting identities in order to understand different women's experiences across geography and history

· apply knowledge of local and global issues and debates in women's studies to effect positive change in women's lives

As an interdisciplinary and introductory course, Introduction to Women's Studies: Women and Society presents you with a variety of readings and methodologies exploring the complexities of gender and women's roles historically and in contemporary societies. In this essay, you will apply these materials and approaches to a current news event related to women's studies.

Please do the following:

1. Choose a recent (published within the last 12 months) news article (ex, newspapers, newsmagazines, online newspaper, news blogs, etc.) about women's issues that you believe would prove useful in a discussion in a Women's Studies course.

2. Analyze the news article chosen by utilizing the course materials for support (use quotes!), make explicit connections between your article and women's issues discussed in our class. Be sure to cite your sources.

3. Search for outside scholarly sources (such as academic journal articles and books) to support and back up your analysis.

Important Notes:

1. Use at least 3 outside sources written within the last ten years, but base your essay primarily on the course materials.

2. Recommended length: 1,000 to 1,500 words (3 - 5 pages) excluding cover and reference pages, letter size: 12, and double-spaced.

3. Check introduction, conclusion, citations and references before submitting your paper. Many students are losing their points in these areas.

4. This project is worth 40 points (or 12.5%) of your final grade. Your paper will be graded based on the rubric. You can read the rubric before writing your paper, and check it with the rubric after writing. Please see the rubric below for the objective grading criteria for this assignment.

5. Submit your essay as an attachment to the Assignments folder. Submissions created in Microsoft Word are preferred. If you do not have this program, then please submit your work in PDF file format.

6. Make a back-up copy of your essay prior to turning it in. Keep this copy for your records.
