Overview.

In recent days, the healthcare industry has been termed as one of the industries affected, more so during the hard times of coronavirus. The world has faced a wide range of challenges associated with the provision of healthcare services along with the prevention increased spread of the infamous deadly coronavirus. Other than affecting the economic progress of the globe, it is also important to note that upon the outbreak of covid 19, healthcare faced numerous challenges, and a few months later, the psychiatric department felt the heat and impacts of the said pandemic (Poghosyan, Norful, & Laugesen, 2018,). Several mental health predisposing factors increase the risk of an individual developing mental challenges to appoint that they may not be able to perform their daily duties as required. Statistics from various organization on mental status in their facilities indicates that in every 5 adults, at least 1 person is experiencing mental illness. This is equivalent to 18.5% of the US population. Also, in 20.2 million US adults who abuse substances, it has been portrayed that 10.2 million of the said population had a co-occurring mental disorder. Mental disorders cost the United States over $193.2 billion on annually.

The essence of this guide is to provide insights that could be applied to support mentally disturbed people within a healthcare organization. The paper will also provide an extensive analysis of how nursing and psychiatric crisis as a national healthcare issue impacting various healthcare organizations, as well as offer an explanation of how the issues are being addressed by other organizations.

Describe the national healthcare issue/stressor you selected and its impact on your organization.

The mental illness crisis has been regarded as one of the national health stressors. Recent studies have shown that over the last three years, there has been a tremendous increase in the cases of mental health problems. The increase has been associated with demographic changes, an aspect that has primarily led to the rise of such cases by over 15% in both public and private healthcare facilities. Perhaps increased substances use in the last decades has also been termed as one of the reasons why the world is experiencing a surging number of people with mental challenges. Other factors leading to escalation of mentals illness to a crisis level in many healthcare organizations include exposure to a stressful environment, existing chronic medical conditions, and a history of mental illness.

One of the impacts of the mental crisis in a healthcare organization is that it impacts the facility's economic level as mental treatment approaches are expensive to achieve as it takes much longer time to achieve desired healthcare outcomes., sometimes the number of patients admitted with one or two or more mental illness are admitted much longer than expected due to progressive deterioration of mental behavior. There are a few specialized who can handle the surging number of patients with mental disorders. In many cases, nurses face tough times handling with patients with mental problems as some of them are too aggressive and never accept taking medication (Palumbo, Rambur, & Hart, 2017). Mentally challenged people are hard to care for since, depending on the severity of mental illness, a few of these patients may engage nurses in physical fights and other forms of aggressive behavior. This aspect raises security issues for nurses taking care of mentally disturbed patients. Also, due to the progressive increase of mental cases, there have been many instances where the nurse-to-patient ratio in the psychiatric department has gone far beyond levels that nurses can manage.

Upon reviewing various articles about mental crises in many healthcare organizations, it is evident that challenges associated with nursing and psychiatric are more or less the same across different healthcare facilities. In the first article, some of the strategies put forth to address these issues included: progressive provision of nurse education about the emerging trend on mental illness, which must entail understanding mental health crises. Perhaps nurse education should cover current warning signs of a mental health crisis and what to do in a mental health crisis. Also, it is provided that whenever there is a mental health crisis, nurses are advised to express support and concern to the affected individual to help reduce aggressiveness.

The second article also recommended that during a mental health crisis, organizations, through their mental specialists, should keep their voice calm, avoid overreacting, listen to the person affected, involvement family members while making a treatment plan, avoid making judgmental remarks, never argue with the affected person and perhaps provide treatment options rather than taking control of the situation (Jacobs, McGovern, Heinmiller, & Drenkard, 2018).

Besides that, the article also provides that there is a need to establish community mental health services, invest more resources in mental healthcare, employ a sufficient workforce to care and manage challenges experienced in psychiatric units while providing effective mental services, establishing and building local capacity along with informal community based mental health services. Lastly, many organizations have shown their efforts of integrating mental health services within the primary healthcare setting.

Summarize the strategies used to address the organizational impact of national healthcare issues.

One of the strategies used by various organization to address the issues of nursing and psychiatric intervention included establishment of community mental health services to enlighten the community about need to seek mental health services as early as when the first signs are noted to prevent escalation of the condition to unmanageable status. This will help raise community awareness the existing and emerging trends in mental related issues. Also, though employment of a sufficient workforce, mentally change patients will be taken care off and perhaps reduce workload among the healthcare professional taking care of mentally challenged patients(Jacobs, McGovern, Heinmiller, & Drenkard, 2018).

Additionally, through the establishment and building local capacity along with informal community based mental health services have been found to be effective ways of handling mental crisis in healthcare facilities(Jacobs, McGovern, Heinmiller, & Drenkard, 2018). Lastly it can be said that through progressive provision of nurse education together with the integration of mental health services within the primary healthcare setting will provide an avenue where nurses will interact with mentally affected patients and offer personalized care that best meets their health needs.

Explain how they may impact your organization both positively and negatively.

On a positive note, increasing the number of psychiatric nurses will ensure that patent centered care within the mental health care unit will be improved. The quality of mental health care services will also improve. Perhaps integrating mental health care in the primary care setting will also help reduce the chances of an eruption of mental health crises. The integration will also reduce the cost of treatment, minimize chronicity of mental health challenges as well as improve social integration for both mentally affected individuals and their family household. Lastly, it can be said that building community-based mental health services will enable people with mental disorders to maintain a strong link and friendship to the society, maintain jobs and facilitate the provision of mental treatment and early rehabilitation before mental illness escalates to severe levels. The only challenges that may be posed by the said strategies is economic straining due to lack of enough resources and human workforce to undertake the initiatives as required (Jacobs, McGovern, Heinmiller, & Drenkard, 2018).
