Background

Students enrolled in the PGDipCP and MCP will need to create a research proposal,

and will need to seek approval from the Pathway Proposals Committee in the case of

Level 9 (MCP) research. A research proposal for a significant creative project (60 or

more credits) typically includes a review of literature and practice. The two components

of this assessment are aimed at serving both the research proposal and your final

exegesis as two separate aspects of this course. The 2000 – 2500 word essay is an indepth literature review that you would expect to see in an exegesis at this level. The

short 1000 word version of this essay is to be submitted for this course and

incorporated into the research proposal.

Task: Literature Review Part 1

Your essay should:

• Summarise and compare significant and relevant literature and/or practices

• Identify and critically evaluate claims made by relevant authors/practitioners

• Support and contextualise a research question or intended research project

• Demonstrate awareness of relevant histories or issues pertaining to your topic

• Identify and discuss possible gaps in knowledge as indicated by your review

• Demonstrates awareness of writing for a specialised readership within your field

of knowledge
