Assessment Accommodations for ELs Project

Assessment Accommodation for ELs Project:

a. Using an established lesson plan, create a formal assessment differentiated for each level of ELL proficiency (entering, beginning, developing, expanding, and bridging).

i. Create a formal write-up introducing an overview of the content-level learning tasks and instructional accommodations for each level of English Language Proficiency.

ii. Include information about what the assessment would look and be like at each level of English Language Proficiency.

iii. Include a rationalization for each assessment and include at least two appropriate accommodations at each level to guarantee success on the assessment.

iv. Discuss each accommodation, and identify any potential problems that may arise, and describe a solution to these problems.

v. Include one sample of the assessment, identified for EL proficiency level. Assessments do not have to be long! There are various styles and lengths. They can be formal or informal, but for this project, include an example that would be graded and placed into your gradebook!

vi. Include a formal cover page and include a citation for the original lesson plan on your reference page (you will be citing yourself OR the author of the plan).

b. Assignment length: Minimum of 3 pages, exclusive of formal cover page and references page; third person

Using a graphic organizer to help plan your project may be beneficial!

Page 1- Formal cover page

Next page – Your lesson plan summarized in 2-3 paragraphs, including objectives for each level of English Language profiency (1-5)

Use a lesson plan you have already created. Do not write a new one – no need! I know you all have undergraduate degrees. If you really want to challenge yourself to develop something new, that’s okay, but I don’t require it. Recycle and save your own efforts for the tasks below.

Next page(s) – Your 2-3 paragraphs about what the assessment task(s) is/are for this lesson for each level of English Language proficiency, inclusive of supports: auditory, social, kinesthetic, visual – only include supports you feel are appropriate. Formal? Informal? Summative? Formative?

Next page(s) – For each level of proficiency’s assessment task, consider the accommodations you’d provide and discuss any potential problems that may arrive and a solution to that problem/those problems. Example: I might allow the use of Google Translate via an iPad for a student fluent in her native language, but a potential problem would be that she could be off-task and use the internet for something other than translation. I would solve that problem by teaching my iPad use during tests expectations.

Next page(s) – One sample of the actual assessment for one level of proficiency of your choice. Show me the test / quiz / writing assignment / worksheet / task / etc.

Helpful Hints:

1. Many students in the past have made lists when it comes to describing the instruction and assessment tasks of each level of proficiency; this is okay, but your list needs to be well-developed and inclusive of the criteria listed in the assignment

2. Your assessment sample (Roman numberal 5 in the assignment) can be for any level of proficiency; only 1 needs to be submitted
