Working in groups is an essential part of that aids in developing competency in the counseling process. My peers and I formed a focused group and planned to work together to achieve the collective goals inherent in the course. The group process entails a group of individuals coming together to determine shared goals and the strategies that will help achieve them (Toseland & Rivas, 2017). Although working in groups is beneficial, it also has its disadvantages. This essay analyzes the strong points of my groups and their weaknesses. Subsequently, it also explores the strategies that can be implemented to assist in the group process.
Strengths of my Group
In my opinion, the strengths inherent in my group that will help achieve our collective goals include the reliability of the members. Most of the team members are reliable individuals who can be depended on to play their roles in the group process effectively. Reliability is a significant trait that will help achieve our agendas because every member of the team can be relied on to perform their stipulated roles that will contribute to the group's success (Proudlock & Wellman, 2011). Strength inherent in the group that will contribute to the team's success is that the group members have resources that can make the process of working together easier. For example, they have access to different learning materials that members can use to learn new things about the topics covered as a team (Proudlock & Wellman, 2011). Subsequently, the members have technological tools such as computers and mobile devices that can be used to communicate and interact effectively.
Weaknesses of the Group
The primary weaknesses in the group that will hamper the competence of the group are slowness in making decisions. The members of the group have to deliberate before making significant decisions that will affect the entire team. The process entails each of the members giving their perspective s about the issue at hand and their opinions about the most desirable decision. Therefore, the slow decision-making process is a significant impediment that will derail the group's progress (Toseland & Rivas, 2017). Another important limiting factor that may affect the group is conflicts between members of the group. Differences in opinion may precipitate conflicts that may undermine the team's cohesiveness that is vital to its effective performance (Toseland & Rivas, 2017). Further, there is a possibility of some members not participating fully in the group process, hence increasing the workload that the serious members of the group have to work on.
Strategies that can be implemented to Assist in the Group Process
The strategies that can be implemented to aid in pushing forward the group's agenda include formulating the fundamental rules that will steer the team. The members must meet together face-to-face and decide on the regulations that the members have to follow, such as what is allowed and forbidden (Proudlock & Wellman, 2011). It also includes aspects such as the time that the members will be meeting for teamwork and the duration the meetings will take. Further, it comprises deliberating on the role that each member will play towards the group's success. Another effective strategy that will assist in the group process is selecting the communication channels that the group will use in passing information from one person to another to ensure that group activities progress seamlessly.
The strategy implemented during the week is selecting the communication channels that will be used to pass information between members. The members identified zoom meetings as an alternative method of contravening when it is impossible to meet face to face and discuss the group's agenda. Subsequently, text messaging is another method that was identified as strategic in passing information among members. Identifying the communication channels is necessary to ensure that all members get significant information promptly (Toseland & Rivas, 2017). Additionally, it is vital to monitor the progress of members while undertaking group activities.
Conclusion
The group process is an essential part of the counseling process because it helps individuals work together to achieve shared goals, hence achieving more milestones faster. It is significant to analyze team members to know their strengths, which should be capitalized on, and the weaknesses that should be overcome. Subsequently, implementing strategies such as setting the communication channels helps in fast-tracking a group's progress.
