ASTRONOMY PROJECT – PHYS 1403 ONLINE

Your project will be to create your own Astronomy Lab using any of the Astronomy Project Simulations linked at the end of this document. You need to follow a similar format to the labs you have completed thus far. So, reviewing past and future labs should give you some ideas on where to start. The lab you create will need to have the following components:

1. Objective - States the purpose/s and learning outcome/s of the lab

2. Equipment – States any equipment needed for the lab

3. Introduction or Background Info – Introduces the concepts the lab is addressing and any important background information necessary to understand them.

4. Lab Exercise

4.1 Procedure - Instructions a student would need to complete the lab. Use a few pictures or screen

shots to help make your instructions clear.

4.2 Questions and Data Collection- Items student needs to complete to achieve Objective. Use

Data Tables for collection of data where possible. Complete the exercises, fill in the data table, answer the questions so that your document is a “key” for someone else doing the lab.

5. Conclusion - Ask a question evaluating the conclusion of the lab. Write what you learned from this exercise.

There are no length requirements on the Lab you are writing. However, each section should contain enough information such that someone who had no previous knowledge of the topic could understand it without use of additional resources. Please browse through the various simulations and choose one that you will use and let me know your choice ASAP as I would like each student to use a different simulation as far as possible. If you find something not on our list, you are welcome to use it. The final document you turn in will represent a “key” for the lab and should contain all the expected or acceptable answers to all of the questions. If you use additional resources, make sure you cite them.

You will turn in your lab in Week 15. Please see the syllabus for the exact due date.

Since this is a writing project proper spelling and grammar are part of your grade.

Objective and Equipment: 5 points

Introduction and background information: 5 points

Procedure: 10 points

Data and Questions: 15 points

Conclusions: 5 points

Overall idea and design: 10 points

Total = 50 points
