A Socio-Cultural Approach to Creativity
The Socio-Cultural Perspective
In contrast to individual-based ideas and theories of creativity (such as the “lonely” genius, the creative person etc.), this view focuses on social interaction, communication and collaboration.
“Creativity takes place within, is constituted and influenced by, and has consequences for, a social context” (Westwood & Low, 2003, p. 236).
The Socio-Cultural Perspective
Creativity is seen as a socio-cultural process where social transactions are at the core of creativity (Vygotsky, 1930/1983, Bennis & Biederman, 1997; John-Steiner, 2000).
Understanding creative people and objects demonstrates that artistic innovations emerge from joint thinking, exchanges among people, which emphasizes the role of social dimension of creativity (John-Steiner, 2000).
The Socio-Cultural Perspective
The socio-cultural perspective considers that every inventor is always a creature of his/her time and of his/her environment.
His/her creative capacities arise from needs formed before him and rest on the possibilities that exist outside him.
Class Discussion
Consider an object you consider to be creative, is there a social/cultural aspect to it’s conception?
Imagination, Culture and Creativity
One example that demonstrates the idea of sociocultural creativity is Vygotsky’s view of development of imagination
Vygotsky (1986) views the development of imagination as a part of the cultural development of the child’s personality, rather than as an innate capacity. He describes the relationship with culture and imagination in 4 ways:
Imagination, Culture and Creativity
1. The creativity activity of imagination directly depends on the richness and variety of previous experience, because fantasy is created by experience. The richer the experience, the more content for imagination.
Imagination Culture and Creativity
2. Our social experiences and exchanges feed our imagination. Historical and social experiences of others are feed our own imagination with memories and representations.
Imagination, Culture and Creativity
3. Emotions influence imagination and imagination influence emotions. Emotions are usually corresponding to our experiences with our cultural/social reality.
Imagination, Culture and Creativity
4) Once imagination enters reality as an object, it enters culture and affects it.
In Sum
The Socio Cultural Approach takes into consideration the cultural aspects of the creativity process, and perceives that our cultural and social environment not only have a role to play on what we create, but that what we create also shapes our social experience.
