Professionalism

As a future educator there are professional standards that will need to be upheld to the students, families, colleagues, and administration. These behaviors will reflect morals, professionalism, and integrity of my character not only as a person but as an employee and educator to the families that I will be serving.

First, my students are my number one priority. I will make sure that they are in a safe learning environment. One way that this can be fulfilled is when talking to them it will be in a respectful manner, clear, and culturally sensitive. Also, when building relationships, they will not become romantic or sexual. In addition, if behaviors arise then the student will be pulled outside the classroom so the discussion of appropriate behavior can occur in a private manner. Students will be an active participant in the classroom as a team we will set reasonable academic goals. As a future educator I understand that the pattern of learning will vary from student to student.

Next, building a relationship with the family is important, therefore I will make myself approachable and welcoming. This will help in connecting with families to establish a safe positive learning environment for their children. Respecting their beliefs and expectations to meet challenging goals and making sure to communicate in a timely and professional manner about their children’s best interest. When parents inform me of confidential information about their child to better assist their child the information will not be spread around for others to know.

Third, building a relationship with colleagues is important. This will allow us to work together to establish positive and supporting learning environments. When talking with co-workers it will be done in a respectful and professional manner, it will be free of harassment. I am firm believer in do unto others as you would want them to do unto you. When speaking about my colleagues it will be truthful and kindhearted words.

Finally, when building a relationship with the administration from my future school I will be sure to be truthful about my qualifications and truthful during my interview. I will show professional and personal conduct in the best interest of the school family. As an educator, I will advocate for policies and laws that support the well-being of my students and their families. When sharing lesson plans or the school curriculum it will be done in a manner that respects intellectual property ownership rights. Informing administration of a potential teacher it will be someone who has the character, education, and other relevant attributes.

As a future educator I promise to be respectful not only to my colleagues but also to my students and their families. The students will become an active participant in the classroom and their families’ beliefs and expectations will be respected. My colleagues will be an outlet, so we can create a positive and supporting learning environments. My integrity will show throw when I interview for my future school community.

Student Engagement Strategies

I will provide opportunities for my students to experience positive emotions, it drives their effort in education, they are more attentive in class (Stevens, 2015). This in turn gives them a sense of ownership in their learning. When we create self-discovery and meaningful lessons, we engage our students, through inquiry-based learning they are motivated to find the answers (King & King, 2017). The ones who need engagement the most are the students with learning deficits (King & King, 2017). Creating opportunities where all students are successful by understanding their needs and boosting engagement (King & King, 2017). Relationship building will build a foundation of trust and mutual respect, a relationship that reflects caring, compassion, and concern (King & King, 2017). Through your understanding of the students’ needs and interaction where you are creating a true relationship, your students will see that you genuinely care. When engaging my students, I am showing them that I care and that is what fosters the positive social interactions.

Using strategies like think-pair-share will allow students to think about what they just learned. Gallery walks will allow students to have opportunities to walk around the classroom and allow students to see their peers’ work. Also, classroom transformations will allow the classroom to be turned into an experience for students, use all five sense to help make it memorable after all you are teaching, so they will remember the topic. Another strategy, Stop and Think supports engagement as students can self-reflect on their learning. Have students answer questions like, what am I struggling with, what can I do differently, what questions do I have, and who can help me, when they are having difficulty with an assignment (Haynes, 2020). This will help students determine what area they are having trouble with and be able to get specific help from either their teacher or classmate. Using self-evaluation is a skill that will help them for years to come (Hayne, 2020).

In addition, Class Dojo is a behavioral tool, it allows students to receive or lost points on their behavior, discussion approaches, and other skills based on the teacher’s expectations (Teach Thought Staff, 2020). Students or the teacher can create their own avatar to represent them. Educators can create a reward system, the rewards can be free like sit in the teacher’s chair, sit at the VIP desk, or have lunch with the teacher. You can buy inexpensive items like pencils, candy, or small toys. Based on the patterns of behaviors teachers can reflect and adjust teaching tactics accordingly to better engage their students in the lesson.

My Philosophy of Classroom Management

Classroom management is challenging, and it can make or break you as a teacher, but the key is consistency. There will be elements from the models that I plan to incorporate into my classroom to enhance classroom management application. Through these strategies it will create a framework that fosters learning and meets the needs of all students. In addition to promoting self-motivation and opportunities for positive social interactions.

First, in order to get respect from my students I have to show them that I genuinely care about them as a person, not just as a student. Setting clear boundaries, expectations, and rules for students to follow is another key component of classroom management, but it is really the consistency in making sure students follow those expectations. I cannot be their friend, but I can still be kind, loving, and supportive (Rabadi & Ray, 2017). Greeting students at the door, I can show them these characteristics, and this also helps set a positive tone and increases academic engagement (Terada, 2019).

Next, the models that I plan to incorporate into my classroom is Ronald Morrish’s, “Real Discipline”, and Kagan, Kyle, and Scott’s, “Win-Win Discipline.” When it comes to Win-Win Discipline the component that stuck out to me is fulfilling student’s needs. There are seven positions that will help teachers understand behaviors that may occur and understanding why a student lashes out will help me eliminate those behaviors before they occur (Kagan, 2002). Some elements from Real Discipline that will be integrated is making sure that I am fair, consistent, and firm (Morrish, 2020). Making sure that I am focused on expectations and teaching appropriate behavior and correcting errors (Morrish, 2020). I plan to use rewards and consequences to help teach skills about courtesy, respect, cooperation, consideration of others, and responsibility (Morrish, 2020). Rewards will not be used as a bribery but to support my teaching and these skills are life skills that everyone should learn.

Then, my classroom management framework meets the needs of all students because when I meet the needs of my student’s behavior occurrences are less frequent and student engagement and learning increases (Erwin, 2016). Greeting students at the door shows students that I care about them as a person and it lets students know that every day is a clean slate (Erwin, 2016). When using rewards as bribery it undermines student’s intrinsic motivation and leads to students doing nothing without a reward (Erwin, 2016). A bribery is not planned, and it is said on a whim, and a reward is planned, and students know the expectation.

Finally, my classroom management framework promotes self-motivation and positive social interactions because I am taking a genuine interest in my students (Ferlazzo, 2015). They will have a voice in my classroom, especially when determining classroom rules. The expectations for my students will be high and attainable. Ways to promote positive social interaction include, students having classroom jobs that will help students learn to work together (Cox, 2020). Also, incorporating learning centers will create opportunities where students will socially interact and team build (Cox, 2020).

Building a relationship with my students, greeting them at the door every morning and letting them know that my kindness, support, and love is sincere. Creating a learning environment where students feel safe and become motivated learners through setting attainable expectations for my students and setting weekly classroom jobs will create moments where students will need to work as a team. Through rewards and consequences and fulfilling my student’s needs, I will reduce behavior issues in the classroom. All of these aspects help build my philosophy of classroom management.

Procedures

Procedure: Use of Chromebook

1. Make sure your hands are clean.

2. Use your assigned Chromebook

3. Only use the approved websites.

4. No food or drinks around the computers.

5. Immediately tell the teacher of any damage or malfunction.

6. Log off when finished using.

7. Check that the charging light is on when turning into the Chromebook cart.

Procedure: Carpet Time

1. When you are called to the carpet use walking feet.

2. Sit on an available circle that is closest to the front of the board.

3. Please sit crisscross applesauce with hands folded in your lap.

4. Please bring only instructed items with you and set them down in front you of you.

5. Wait for instructions.

Procedure: Recess

1. Grab your water, sunglasses, hat, etc. when they are called to line up.

2. Walk quietly in the halls.

3. Play kindly with your friends.

4. Play with the toys and equipment properly.

5. Clean up and line up quickly when called.

Rationale

Classroom procedures are in place to eliminate useless downtime and maximize learning opportunities (Meador, 2019). They help the classroom run like a well-oiled machine because when there are expectations in place students learn to stay on task despite the distractions that can occur throughout the day. Teachers can create procedures for just about everything in the classroom and the clearer and concise the teacher creates expectations, the more the students will understand what is expected for learning. Through the practice of procedures students will understand what the procedure will look like and will implement the procedure correctly after a few days of practicing together (Meador, 2019).

Rules, Consequences, and Reward System

Rules:

1) Do your best

2) Be respectful to your teacher and classmates

3) Raise your hand to speak/leave your seat

4) Follow directions quickly

5) Keep your hands and feet to yourself

Consequences:

1) Warning

2) Think time in class

3) Contact home

4) Detention

5) Principal’s Office

Documenting Consequences:

I will have Class Dojo on the computer and on my phone. Students will lose points without other students knowing. I will also have a large sticky note on my clipboard to write down behaviors that need to be addressed by parents. These students will receive a note home in their homework folders that will need to be signed and returned or I will call home during my planning period or after school.

Reward System

The teacher will collect individual and class points through class dojo. For individual points students can cash them in for rewards. Students will earn rewards for being caught following the rules or being kind or helpful to another classmate. For whole class rewards they will earn points if they receive compliments from other teachers, lining up quietly the first time, walking quietly in the hallways, anytime the whole class is making good choices.

Rationale

The reward system helps motivate students to promote positive behavior in the classroom. Students will earn individual points for helping others and following classroom rules which creates a safe learning environment for all students. Students will also learn class rewards which creates an opportunity for students to work as a team and makes everyone to be responsible of their actions to help keep a productive learning environment since it takes everyone to earn class rewards. Through appropriate student behavior, teachers are able to focus on the lesson content and interactive activities satisfy students learning verses focusing on classroom discipline (Ministry of Education, 2016).

Classroom Arrangement and Cooperative Learning

Rationale

When designing a classroom there are several items to think about, some that I took into consideration were how to eliminate distractions, how to create collaboration in the classroom and foot traffic in the classroom. Through these questions I determined that I would prefer tables so students could work together, have an area for whole group learning, and create a safe and organized classroom for safe foot traffic in the classroom.

When designing my classroom, I thought about distractions, group learning, flexible seating, and a way to create an environment that is safe, cozy, and will boost learning. I choose to use an area rug in the front of the room for whole group learning this way students will be eliminated from distractions at their desk and will all have a chance to see the white board without having interruptions of not being able to see. Another way to help eliminate distractions was putting the computers and classroom library at opposite ends of the classroom. The room is designed to eliminate tight areas or areas that could cause feet traffic jams. I placed sofas in the library and an area rug so students could sit comfortably and read a book if they were an early finisher or during a reading center.

Tables were the preferred seating choice in the classroom because this allowed students to work together in groups without having to move or rearrange desks, which also saves time and energy. In addition, students are able to communicate with their group and either get help they need from their peers or help a classmate who needs additional help before asking the teacher for help. The flexible seating option allows students to choose their preference of seating in the morning and stay with that seat throughout the day unless they are not following the expectations. This also provides students to wiggle as need to help them focus on their learning.

Through careful thought and consideration, I used an area rug for students to sit for quick whole group lessons. That the classroom library and computer area should be at opposite ends of the classroom. There should be plenty of storage to help create a safe and organized classroom. Creating collaboration and communication opportunities by having students sit at tables with classmates instead of individuals desks.
