Project Description
This project was undertaken with the aim of improving the lives of the soldiers of the US Army. AMR Defense Contractors is the company that detected the problem that soldiers face while on the ground operations as well as while in special missions—where they lack proper ways of packaging their food and lack a good older for the radio while not engaging in communication. Apparently, the backpacks that are used by the U.S. soldiers are bulky, and they occupy a large surface area. In this project, the backpack to be developed will be much smaller but with the ability to accommodate all the staff that the other bags can hold, and even more. But, that is not all. Other things that will make this backpack more unique is the aspect of additional features, especially a pouch with refrigeration mechanism, where anything placed inside it, will remain cool-refrigerated. Another additional feature will be the inclusion of a module which can hold a radio, and improve the usability of the radio.
Project Assumptions
While developing this backpack, AMR Defense Contractors will make several assumptions. The first assumption will be that after the U.S. soldiers are guided on how to use the backpack, they will not have a problem of forgetting since it is quite easy to use. Secondly, the company will assume that the gathered possible requirements of the customers’ needs are appropriate and close to accurate. Also, on proceeding with the development of the project, it will also be assumed that the hypothesis behind the development of the backpack had been tested and found to be true. It will also be assumed that in proceeding with the development of this particular product, it will follow steps in sequence, as it would have been planned in the timeline.
Project Goals
The project is aimed at improving the packaging methods and means for the customers or rather the users of the backpack. Another goal of AMR Defense Contractors is to increase the sale of the backpack using creating demand due to its authenticity in the creation. The other major goal by AMR Defense Contractors is the aspect of invention and innovation where it will be the first company to produce a backpack with a refrigeration system. Another goal of the company is to arrive at a substantial solution to problems that are associating with the carriage as far as military operations are concerned. The backpack is destined to be an all-in-one carrier. With this pack, the soldiers will be able to move at ease, with more flexibility and speed than ever before. Lastly, AMR Defense Contractors looks into being more active in the production of the backpack, and replace the other suppliers due to the superiority of this product. Also, the backpack is expected to be manufactured with high endurance and durability,
Project Constraints
The only inhibitors that AMR Defense Contractors is likely to experience whole producing this backpack for the first time are lack of commitment from the side of the suppliers of the raw materials. Another inhibitor can come from the dissatisfaction of the customers, where they can probably ask for redesigning of the product. Also, overthrowing competitors is a hard task that would require for AMR Defense Contractors to apply more expertise that would be costly, as a way of standing out among competing companies. Another possible constraint is a change of requirements by the customer—in case they may come to take place.
Project Limitations
The only limitation that can come along the development of the modernized and more sophisticated backpack include lack of enough workforce since this is an innovation and thus, there is no record of any individual in the company with experience on how to go about the manufacturing process for the product conversantly. Another limitation can be lack of enough raw materials or machines required for the production process. Also, machines may crash, and bringing them back to service may consume time and cost too.
Project Milestones
The project milestone kicks off from the time it was awarded to AMR Defense Contractors in 2015. The first milestone after that is conducting a product design face. In this phase, the procedures involved include thorough design and planning of the modules of the backpack. Also, illustrations—showing how the soldier would use the backpack have to be presented to the customer as part of progress update before proceeding to the next phase. After the prototype of the product is manufactured, it has to be tested, where these two activities will take place in the next phase or the next milestone. This would be followed by remanufacturing—where errors would be corrected. This process will be repeated until the desired product is produced. Justification of correctness will be done after the final test, which would be followed by the next phase of beginning production. This would be followed by delivery of the product.
Project Risks
The potential risks during the production process include budget constraints, unnoticed errors in design, lack of enough workforce, underproduction, lack of enough supplies of raw materials, and in a rare case, defective production. In mitigating these risks, budget constraints can be taken care of by ensuring that there is enough funds or reliable and guaranteed funders of the project who are a standby in the whole time of the project to completion. Shortage or workforce would require hiring enough numbers of persons who can be trained and embark on the job immediately.
