The most important parts of your paper will be literature review and theoretical explanations. I am not setting a minimum number of resources to write your literature review, but note that the more you review, the broader you will cover. If you are talking about religion & mental health link for example, do not just focus on positive findings. Some studies also found negative effects of religiosity; some others found no significant relations at all. So, look at the topic critically and mention these findings. Make sure you check the reference list of the article/book you reviewed. That will lead you more resources (Topics will give you an idea what they are about).
In theoretical arguments section, explain why and how this relationship persists. Social investigators who find a positive link between religion & mental health attribute it to “Social Network” theory (This is just one of them, there are lots of others such as Social Identity Theory, Divine Command Theory, etc.). The more individuals participate to religious services, the more social interaction they have (which increases the likelihood of their coping in times of difficulties/hardships). There are hundreds of theories explaining social phenomena. You don’t have to find and name a theory for the relationship you write about. But make sure you explain why/how there is a positive/negative relationship you hypothesize (In fact, theories are explanations).
