Art
Art Project with Essay Instructions
All work must have your Name, Class and Section number. Essay must be typed.
Worth 100 points – This project should take a minimum of three hours
Choose one piece of artwork we have studied from our book (chapters 1, 2 or 4)
Do not choose an artwork from Chapter 3 - as we do not cover that chapter this semester.
This must be from our text and art we have studied together in this class.
You may not do a logo or a symbol. For example: you may not recreate the Nike symbol or a yin yang.
If you have a question about the artwork you have chosen, please email me.
First Step
Recreate the artwork you have chosen.
You may use materials we studied in class (pencil, charcoal, water color, acrylic, ink, clay or collage etc.) or other materials (fabrics, wood, rocks, flowers, crayons, markers, food etc.) to recreate it.
You can use whatever materials you have available to you.
Please do not use lined notebook paper for drawings, paintings etc.
Please take photos of your project while you are working on it. These are called progress photos. (you will need a minimum of two)
Second Step
Write at least 20 thoughtful sentences, in an essay format, using specific and relevant art vocabulary we have learned in our class.
This is not a research paper. You do not need to include any historical information.
This essay is to be about your opinion and recreation process.
You must include the name of the artist and artwork AND what chapter and section. Write about why you chose the artwork.
How it makes you feel.
Why you like it about it and/or what about the subject matter or materials do you find interesting.
Tell me about your process of recreating it.
These should be in your own words. If you use information or words from any other source you must cite your sources.
Do not use AI generated work.
*** If I feel your essay is AI generated, I will stop grading and message you to contact me to defend your work. If you do not respond, you will receive no points for your essay.***
As stated in your syllabus:
Generative AI Prohibited
You may not use generative AI (GAI) tools, such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot, for any assignments in this course. All work must be entirely your own. The goal is to develop your independent critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving skills without GAI assistance. If you are unsure whether a specific tool or application is allowed, please ask me before using it. This policy aims to ensure that your academic growth is based on your own intellectual efforts and to maintain the integrity of your learning process.
Last Step – Submit your work
You will submit the written portion and upload photographs of your work through Canvas.
Submit in in the correct Canvas tab. Please do not email it to me.
You may do multiple submissions.
I suggest submitting text entries and photos separately.
Please take clear, focused photos so that I can clearly see the work. I would like to see progress photos (two minimum) and at least one photo of the final piece.
Only submit jpeg photos & word documents or text entry.
You may embed photos into a word document. You may submit media recordings.
DO NOT submit .HEIC photos or pages documents or google links
Grading
You will be graded as follows:
10 Points – for following instructions
20 Points – for the essay portion - At least 20 sentences/written in essay form/ no bullets points/artist and title of work included in essay/how you recreated it/why you choose it/did you use your own words?/spelling/grammar
70 Points – for the art project- Art from the chapters we studied/the effort put into recreation/can I tell from looking at your recreation what your original art it is based on?/did not used lined paper
100 total points
Student Examples
You will see Artworks chosen by the students and their originals recreations.
Please keep in mind some of these examples may have come from previous editions of our text book and may not be included in our current text.
Only chose artwork to recreate art that we have studied this semester.
DO NOT use a symbol or a Logo
Please try to pick a piece of artwork that you liked. Logos and symbol are a little too
simplified for this project. Remember, I suggest this project should take you three hours.
AVOID these problems
Do not use lined paper, make sure I can see the project clearly in the photos,
Spend some time on the project, do not wait until the last minute,
And be sure to turn in your essay
