Art 206 – Intro to Visual Arts Ms. Thompson

Artist Paper Format and Common Errors

Paper Format

· Minimum length is 500 words, not including the heading (a little over 2 pages).

· Use MLA format (Google Purdue Owl MLA for all tips and rules)

· Insert the page number and your last name in the top right corner of each page (using the page number tool in Microsoft Word). For example: Thompson 1

· Heading should be double spaced on the left side of page and include the student’s name, the instructor’s name, the class number and title, and the due date

· Title of the paper should be centered and capitalized. For example:

Jackson Pollock and Action Painting

· Spacing paper should be double spaced (throughout whole paper)

· Font size: 12 point. Font style: Times New Roman, Do not bold any of the words or periods.

· All margins should be 1".

· USE CORRECT GRAMMAR AND SPELLING. Points will be taken off for any of these mistakes, so get your paper proofread.

Works Cited Page Format

· Begin your Works Cited page on a separate page at the end of your research paper. last name, page number header as the rest of your paper.

· Use MLA format (Google “purdue owl mla works cited page” for all tips and rules)

· Title should be centered and capitalized at the top of the page. For example:

Works Cited

· All margins should be 1".

· Citations should be in alphabetical order .

· Double space all citations, but do not skip spaces between entries.

· Indent the second and subsequent lines of citations to create a “hanging indent”.

· List page numbers of sources efficiently, when needed. For example, if one of your book or article sources refers to information on pages 225 through 250, list the page numbers on your Works Cited page as 225-250.

· For online sources, include a DOI or URL . Many scholarly databases use a DOI (digital object identifier). Use a DOI in your citation if you can; otherwise use a URL. Delete “http://” from URLs. The DOI or URL is usually the last thing in the citation and should be followed by a period.

· All works cited entries end with a period.

Cite Your Artwork’s Image

· Cite your artwork’s image IN TEXT. The first time you mention your artwork’s name in your paper, you must do an in-text citation for the image you will include at the bottom of your paper. For example: Dali’s famous Surrealistic painting, Persistence of Memory, is full of visual elements of art (see fig.1).

· Begin your artwork’s image citation on a separate page after your works cited page. It should have the same one-inch margins and last name, page number header as the rest of your paper.

· Copy and paste a good quality (not pixilated) image of your artwork after your works cited page. Underneath the image you must cite the following information, but use your artist’s name and artwork’s title. For example:

(Fig. 1: Salvador Dali’s Persistence of Memory)

Common Errors

· Cite your sources WITHIN your paper. You must cite any information that is not common knowledge with a source both in your paper and in a works cited page. You MUST site your source even if you paraphrase. IF YOU DO NOT CITE YOUR SOURCES WITHIN YOUR PAPER (NOT JUST IN YOUR WORKS CITED) YOU WILL BE PLAGIARIZING AND WILL RECEIVE A ZERO (0) FOR YOUR PAPER AND POSSIBLY BE REPORTED TO ACADEMIC AFFAIRS.

· Spell out contractions. Don’t should be spelled out as do not, for example.

· Italicize the TITLE of a work of art every time it is used in the paper.

· Never use an artist’s first name within the paper – use his/her last name. The only time you should use the first name is in the introductory paragraph. After that, last name only.

· Subject/verb agreement: For example: "He are." and "They is." are incorrect subject/verb agreements.

· Trying to lengthen a paper with type that is larger than 12 point and/or is bold: 5 to 10 points will be deducted from the total possible bonus points. The same will be done for Margins larger than 1".

· Use Paragraph Format. Every time you start a new idea, start a new paragraph.

· Incorrect use of art terms: Do not use a word if you do not know its meaning or how to use it in reference to an artwork.
