Developing the Communication Competency
Michael Whitener
One of the skills identified that need further development is communication. Communication is crucial for teachers as they are required to communicate the goals or purpose of their lessons to the learners. Besides, teachers have to master communication skills to effectively interact with parents and the community members. Given that the success of education greatly depends on collaboration between various stakeholders, educators have to be excellent communicators. On the other hand, the students have also to be directed by the educators towards becoming excellent in communication as that is one of the education goals.
In the process of developing the communication competency, I have read a book by Johnson and Hackman about leadership and communicative perspectives. From the book, it is evident that teachers who make good leader at school are good communicators. Communication is useful in streamlining the direction of an organization towards achievement of its overall goals (Hackman & Johnson, 1996). Through reading the book, I have learned many factors that govern the nature of communication between different people. Besides the book, the Bible is also another source for developing effective communication skills. In the book of James 1:19, the author advices people to listen actively, and avoid being emotional when speaking. The advice is very useful in reinforcing communication skills. As an educator, the Biblical message is a reminder that to be competent in communication, I should resist from being carried away by emotions and instead focus on getting the message. Additionally, in the book of Proverbs 18:21, the author asserts that a tongue can bring life or destruction. Consequently, teachers have to be keen with every word spoken as it has the potential to enhance collaboration at school or destroy everything.
