Competent Plan: Improving Leadership Skills

Michael Whitener

Teachers are expected to have proficient leadership skills to provide a better learning environment for their learners. Leadership skills help them solve different schooling environment challenges (Council of Chief State School Officers, 2011). While leadership is essential, most teachers lack these skills, and thus the area continually deserves further development.

To improve my leadership skills, I have engaged in different artifacts and participated in different activities. One of the artifacts I have extensively utilized is an article by Rockman et al. (2011) that talks about leadership skills in learning institutions. According to the article, which provides a comprehensive EPIC report on transformational leadership, teachers are expected to manifest leadership skills to bolster students' performance. Leadership contributes to better performance because the educators learn to accommodate the different needs of the learners and include them in the teaching and learning process. Further, educators are expected to have good leadership skills to provide a better direction for the learners and other staff in the school. Apart from reading the article, I have also attended various events with main themes focused on leadership in learning institutions. The events have provided a better opportunity to reinforce my leadership skills as an educator. I feel motivated to achieve more with my new leadership abilities.

One of the Biblical references that deal with leadership is servant leadership that Jesus taught His disciples. Jesus established that leaders must be ready to serve their subjects with humility and great love. In the same line, the educators are expected to serve all the students equally and provide an opportunity for them to do better. Leaders lead from the front, and so should the educators.
