Weekly Article Summary
Zarea et al. (2018) investigated the situations that nurses encounter while serving psychiatric patients. In the article titled Challenges faced by nurses working in acute psychiatric wards: A qualitative study in Iran the authors explored the challenges experienced by nurses caring for mentally ill individuals. According to the write-up, psychiatric patients need comprehensive care and constant attention to cater to their numerous needs. Firstly, their cognitive function is impaired; hence they may harm themselves or other individuals. Secondly, they may not effectively engage in activities of daily living such as feeding and cleaning up; thus, they may need constant help (Beks et al., 2018). Their mental affectations, such as high stress levels or intense depression, also affect the nurses.
The Purpose of the Study
The purpose of the study was to investigate the impact of the challenging surrounding that psychiatric nurses work in on the nurses tasked with their primary care (Zarea et al., 2018). The goal was to examine whether the nurses were affected by the environment in the psychiatric wards and the process of caring for the patients therein.
Research Questions
The research questions that the article purposed to fins content that answers two significant questions:
1. What are the challenges involved in caring for patients with mental disorders?
2. What is the impact of these challenges on the nurses in charge of caring for these patients?
Method
The authors' methodology to study the impact of the encounters that psychiatric nurses encounter is a qualitative study that utilized semi-structured interviews to collect data (Zarea et al., 018). The compiled findings were scrutinized using an inductive content analytic formula.
Results
The study's findings showed that the professionals encountered several significant challenges that impacted the effectiveness with which they served the clients. Firstly, they encountered psychosocial problems such as developing vulnerabilities to substance and alcohol abuse (Zarea et al. 2018). It also includes developing psychological problems such as bouts of depression or high anxiety levels.
Conclusion
The authors conclude that the environment in the psychiatric wards is detrimental to the health of the nurses therein. The information is significant because it provides information that can be used to improve the situation of the professional tasked with caring for psychiatric patients. The content can be used to deduce the impact of the environment on the nurses and the strategies that can be used to improve them.
