Weekly Article Summary
Isobel and Edwards (2017) carried out investigative research to determine the efficacy of a model of care that is caring for mentally ill patients. The authors carried out a comprehensive study that explored different aspects of the model of care and its applications in clinical practice to determine its efficiency in meeting the dynamic needs of the patient population.
The authors undertook a qualitative study to find content on the topic under discussion. Qualitative research compiles data non-numerical data intending to determine the actuality of a given phenomenon (Stenfors et al., 2020). It provides detailed answers that help in understanding a topic better.
The goal of the investigative research conducted by Isobel and Edwards (2017) was to analyze the processes involved in encapsulating a trauma-informed model of care in a psychiatric unit to determine their efficacy in managing the health and wellbeing of patients. The study purposed to deduce the effectiveness of the model as the primary care framework in the care of ailing individuals.
The primary research questions that the data gathered during the investigative study aimed to answer included:
a) What is the impact of the trauma-informed model of care on the workers day to day working experience?
b) What is the effect of the trauma-informed model of care on the patient outcomes in the treatment process?
The authors conducted informal interviews where they asked semi-structured, open-ended questions to the selected participants. During the discussions, some of the questions included the nurses' views working in the mental care units concerning the newly introduced care model and how it impacted the way they handled patients (Isobel & Edwards, 2017). It also queried how these ailing individuals responded to the treatment process. The findings compiled from the study showed that using the trauma-informed model of care had both positive and negative implications. The model of care precipitated adverse reactions in nurses as they felt it trivialized their significance in care delivery and was an unnecessary process (Isobel & Edwards, 2017). However, it enhanced the outcomes of the treatment process significantly.
The model care effectively improved the quality of care that patients received in the mental care unit. It helped create safe therapeutic environments and encouraged the use of inter-professional forces, reducing the incidences of errors and increasing care delivery efficiency (Isobel & Edwards, 2017). However, the negativity noted was due to an inclination to resist changes in the working modalities. The trauma-informed care model of care is a crucial framework that plays a significant role in treating mentally ill individuals. However, to encapsulate it in the psychiatric units effectively, there is a need to use effective processes that will help in avoiding conflicts and resistance to change in the clinical setting.
