The main idea in the article “If Hitler asked you to electrocute a stranger would you?” is that individuals tend to obey rules and regulations that the people they deem as legal authority figures give them even if the order would be to cause harm to another person. Besides, the author of the article wanted to show how individuals are socialized into following and obeying unlawful and immoral orders from their leaders. This is evident in Milgram's experiment whose purpose was to examine to which extent human beings are willing to go as far as obeying orders from a legal authority figure is concerned. The participants in this experiment were instructed to administer extreme electric shocks to another person.

Besides, the author revealed that authority is very influential and powerful. In Milgram's experiment, the author revealed that the people that were subjected to this experiment performed unethical actions because the order came from an authority figure even though it would be against the wishes of an individual (Meyer, 1970). He also revealed that authority tends to be coercive thus people are afraid of disobeying a leader. Therefore, since authority tends to be very influential, it is essential that an individual that possesses the power understand how coercive power could be because they are often used to make individuals do things that they do not want to do.

Moreover, the author demonstrated that obedience tends to be influenced by power. Essentially, the experiment conducted by Milgram showed that individuals have a strong tendency to obey people in power. He showed that a high degree of apparent prestige as well as being close to an individual with power is often related to high levels of obedience. Besides, he demonstrated that the nature of obedience is based on the idea that the person obeying an order sees himself or herself as a device of fulfilling the wishes of the power figure therefore the person obeying such demands does not assume responsibility for them.

To substantiate his arguments, the author used evidence from Milgram’s experiment. This evidence is reliable because the experiment demonstrated how easily authority could be employed to coerce an individual. Moreover, this experiment involved people receiving an order from an authority figure to electrocute another person (Meyer, 1970). Therefore, this evidence is reliable because about two-thirds of the respondents electrocuted another person just because they were ordered by an authority figure.

The conclusion that I drew from this article is that the nature of authority is coercive. This is because people would do things that they find unethical if they were ordered to do them by a leader. Therefore, it is crucial for an individual in a leadership position to understand the effects that their power has on people and refrain from ordering them to do harmful things. Additionally, leaders could easily abuse authority by directing unethical orders and demands to individuals that are most vulnerable. Lastly, authority or power is very influential because individuals have a strong tendency to obey people in power.
