Although (+) evaluative criterion #1,

[Author’s last name (year)] writes an ineffective article because (-) evaluative criteria #2 and (-) evaluative criteria #3.

Although the writing style of the article is not situable for readers, Philisie writes an ineffective article because its main argument and evidences . Comment by Jessica Yang: if your overall is negative, then the first criterion shall be positive Comment by Jessica Yang: what is the evaluation of the two criteria?

Please put together the sentences from #1 – 3 to write out your INTRODUCTION below:

In the article "Homeless Youth: A Concept Analysis," Philisie Starling Washington examines the concept of homeless youth , Washington begins by explaining that homelessness is a significant problem affecting youth. Philisie Starling Washington, PhD, RN, is an associate professor, Prairie View A&M University College of Nursing, Houston, Texas. Although the writing style of the article is not suitable for readers, Washington presents an effective article because of its strong main argument and sufficient evidence. Comment by Heesun Nam: I would add just a little more detail here. Comment by Heesun Nam: Do you know which field the PhD is from? Comment by Tong Zhou: it didn't show on the info I found. Comment by Heesun Nam: Effective or ineffective? Comment by Heesun Nam: We need adjectives - what kind of main argument? Clear? Unclear? Also, what kind of evidence? Sufficient? Insufficient?

Task #3: Article Review – Summary

Using class lectures and notes, please explain how the author unfolds the main argument using effective time-transition words and reporting verbs: begins, continues, asserts, explains, illustrates, suggests, concludes, compares, contrasts, adds to, expands…

Example Pattern:

Author’s last name (year) states/explains/illustrates ... [general main argument]

To start/ At first, the author begins/refers that ….

Then, the author asserts/elaborates/expands that ….

After that, he/she continues/describes/adds that …

In the end/Finally, the author suggests/concludes ….

Based on the above information, please write a summary for your article review here.

Then, the author asserts that this population faces unique challenges and requires specialized attention to the various factors that contribute to youth homelessness, including family instability, poverty, and inadequate support systems. Comment by Heesun Nam: What is the actual ARGUMENT of the author? Comment by Jessica Yang: this is more like the topic

After that, she continues that the existing gaps in the literature regarding homeless youth and emphasizes the need for a clear conceptual framework to guide research and interventions.

In the end, Washinton suggests tha t future studies address behavioral problems, public reforms, education, health care, employment, housing relief, and nutritional outcomes.

Task #4: Article Review - Evaluative Paragraph Worksheet

The purpose of this task is to write one evaluative paragraph for your article review by following the general paragraph pattern.

Assertion

State what the paragraph will discuss/prove with the main THESIS key word (overall evaluation) and an ASSERTION key word (criteria + evaluation of criteria) from the roadmap.

Body paragraph #2

e.g. However, the article is ineffective because of the complex writing style through which the author writes the article

Explanation

(one sentence)

Explain the evaluation of the criteria (assertion key word) in more detail.

e.g. More specifically (=In more detail) , the author chooses to use a series of jargons that do not have a significant bearing on the overall main argument.

Evidence 1

More general evidence below; make sure to introduce with accurate context to the criteria (i.e. organization/evidence/style) and use some “quotation” to prove close reading of the article.

e.g. For instance, when the author describes the scene of a child being separated from her mother in order to be taken to her workplace, the author states, “The mise-en-scene of this scene is heartbreaking.” (Smith, 2017, p.00)

Discussion 1

Explain how the evidence proves the evaluation in your own words. Remember to use specific evaluative language/ focus on proving the evaluations of the criteria, and how the author was successful/unsuccessful in using the criteria.

e.g. Clearly, the author is using the phrase “mise-en-scene” in order to describe the heartbreaking scene of the separation between the mother and the child, but the words do not bring any new meaning or introduce any new idea into the argument. The phrase “mise-en-scene” is used to describe a particular scene from a film, thereby not being appropriate for this type of article (citation). The writing style of the article takes away from the description of the scene.

Evidence 2

Use another quote or direct reference to the book/article. Make sure to introduce with accurate context to the criteria. Use some “quotation” to prove close reading of the article.

e.g. In addition, Moreover, Not only this) + (The article also states/reports/highlights)

Discussion 2

Explain the effectiveness or ineffectiveness of the evidence as it is related to the chosen criteria and its evaluation. Use specific evaluative language to justify your evaluation.

e.g. Clearly (=For this reason, With this in mind), This suggests/reveals/means/highlights that,

Connection sentence

Using the thesis key word (overall evaluation) and the assertion key word (criteria + evaluation of the criteria) (same key words from the assertion), summarize how the paragraph proved the assertion/thesis

e.g. Therefore(=Thus/Hence),

Please complete your body paragraph in the table below.

Body paragraph #1 assertion: Although

Body paragraph #2 assertion: However ,

Body paragraph #3 assertion: … also
