5. What are two (or more) theories that are discussed in the Introduction? How are they used to motivate (or set up) the research question?
Do the authors agree or disagree with these theories?
The theories that are discussed in the introduction is if CBT skills increase treatment progress, changing the CBT skills during treatment affect the progress and whether or not the skills intervene in the treatment and outcome. The skills were evaluated on skill use and quality of skill.
6. What previous research (not theories) have been conducted on this topic? How do these previous studies relate to the current research question?
Based on the article is discuess that previous research has neglected the role of skills use. Previous research was done on on potential mediators, cognitive, behavioral and coping variables on chidren with depression.
7. Why is the proposed research the logical next step (that is—what rationale and motivation) is there for this research? What hole in Psychological knowledge is this study following?
The reason for this research was to determine what was the best CBT skill to utilize to treat depression. It evaluates the frequency and quality of the skills used. Finding this information out will determine what method is treatment has the better outcome. This research also examines whether a certain CBT skill have a risk of relapse
8. How is the research question operationalized? (First, identify the abstract constructs being studied. Next identify the concrete way these are being observed or measured. This should include your IV and DV.)
The research question was operationalized by using 23 studies. 12 studies were used to address the frequency of each skill and 10 studies had addressed the quality and 1 study was used that addressed both of these. The independent variables were indivuals who were diagnosed with unipolar depressive disorder or had symptoms of moderate depression. The dependent variables were behavioral activation for depression scale(BADS), cognitive-behavioral therapy skills questionnaire(CBTSQ), skills of cognitive therapy (SoCT) and post therapy evaluation(PTE).
9. What is the research design? (I.e. between or within subjects, what type of statistical tests were used, what were the levels of each variable)
The research was designed by searching PubMed, Scopus and PsycInfo to find different literature relevant to the research question. The reference list of cited articles were also used in the research.
10. Describe the results (but not their broader implications). Were their results significant? Which ones? Do these support or not support the hypothesis?
BADS is a 25 item questionnaire that measures the frequency of behavioral activation skills. The results of BADS had good concurrent and predictive validity but was related to depression symptons rather than skills used. CBTSQ is a 16 item questionnaire assessing frequency of performance of CBT skills. It is a 1-5 number scale, with 1 meaning I don’t do this and 5= I always do this. Sample questions for Behaviorla Activation subscale is “I socialize even though I don’t feel like it.” Sample question for Cognitive Restructuring subscale is “I catch myself when I jump to conclusion.” CBTSQ has good validity and the items appear to be a effective use of skills.
SoCT is an 8 item measure of patients CBT skill use.
CBTSQ, SoCT and BADS need futher study.
11. Outline the discussion. (Divide the discussion into thematic groups with their own subheadings. This should probably begin with a summary of the results, and the previous sources. How many sources are used in the general discussion? Summarize the sources used and how they relate to the discussion and the research question.)
12. What limitations are mentioned? Why are these limitations theoretically interesting?
There is a limited amount of research done. The conclusion is only preliminary.
13. What future research is anticipated? Why is the future research theoretically interesting?
There should be futher research is needed into skills used. “ Future research should attempt to discover the extent to which this is the case. One possibility might be using a consensus of expert opinion to determine which items are particularly susceptible to this and running analyses both with and without those items to determine to what degree results are affected by potentially problematic items (Hundt, 2013).”
Studies should distinguish between frequency and quality of skill use. The measure of patient reported skill use and an independent evaluator or therapist evaluation of understanding of use should be combined to have the best results in future research. “Future research should examine whether improvements on one subscale more strongly predict improvements in depression symptoms or whether the best outcomes occur when patients frequently use both types of skills (Hundt, 2013).”
14. What is the Eigenfactor of the journal that published this article? Is it high or low? Do you think that the impact factor influences the quality of the article (or vise-versa)?
There is information on this journal. Yes I think this does influence the quality because it potentially means that this article is not that influencing.
15. How many times has this article been cited? 67 times
