Research Summary: Nursing Professional Autonomy

Today there is a substantial increase in nurse burnout, it's predicted that by the year 2030 there will be high demand for nurses and midwives. Due to the high shortage of nurses, there are many negative effects such as poor healthcare, negative patient outcomes, increased healthcare cost, and many more. Therefore, there is a need to foster nursing professional autonomy to create a sustainable workforce. The research title is " Professional Autonomy in Nursing: An Integrative Review" (Pursio et al. , 2021).

The research aims to summarize and make awareness of the importance of knowing nursing professional autonomy. Professional Autonomy in Nursing entails the involvement of nurses in making decisions towards improving quality and safe patient care. The research is aimed to find out the elements and factors related to the professional autonomy of nursing. The research methodology is an Integrative Review that was conducted to find out the current and robust knowledge of professional autonomy in nursing.

A search was conducted in the following search engines such as PsycINFO, Scopus, PubMed, and CINAHL. The terms used include 'professional autonomy, nursing, and decision making. The research results showed twenty-seven relevant studies. There is a lack of competence and decision-making independence which describe professional autonomy in nursing (Hine-Sanabria et al. , 2018).

In conclusion, healthcare professionals need to comprehend nursing professional autonomy to enhance the nursing workforce and create a healthy working environment. Such an environment should enable the participation of nurses in leadership and decision-making. This research implies supporting nursing leadership and nursing practice hence fostering professional autonomy in nursing.
