Research Summary: Medical-Surgery Nursing

Medical surgery is my area of nursing practice. There has been a rise in the cost of long-term patient care and increased life expectancy in the regional hospitals which have led medical providers to offer home care services to patients (Fatemi et al., 2019). Therefore, I have summarized a research study titled: “Challenges and Barriers Faced by Home Care Canters: An Integrative Review”. It's effective to study the barriers and challenges faced by home care centers since they aid in achieving quality healthcare goals (Valizadeh et al., 2019).

The research study is an integrative review whereby there were specific keywords were searched from several search engines or databases. Examples of the keywords include barriers, challenges, home care nursing, and home care. Examples of search engines used include Goggle Scholar, EBSCO, SID, Magiran, IranDoc, ScienceDirect, and EMBACE. 39 research articles were used for the review and analyzed using the indirect cohort method (Broome) (Valizadeh et al., 2019).

The results of the study showed that the barriers and challenges faced by the care centers included ignoring ethical issues, cultural constraints, and information poverty (illiteracy). Economic problems, absence of security and legal support, lack of effective and adequate human resources, poor infrastructure, poor organizational communications, and negative application of integrated and standard methods for home care nursing services (Valizadeh et al., 2019).

In conclusion, home care centers are faced with many challenges leading to inefficiency in patient care delivery. Therefore, causing an increased number of hospitalized patients. There is a need for accurate and comprehensive programming and coordination among healthcare

providers and the public towards implementing appropriate guidelines, measures, and interventions that will promote quality home care services (Fatemi et al., 2019).
