Precision-Exercise-Prescription in Patients with Lung Cancer Undergoing Surgery: Rationale and Design of the PEP Study Trial

Overview of Article:

The article is focusing on how lung cancer, the leading cancer death related issue has become a significant burden in most societies. Besides, Precision Exercise Prescription (PEP) in patients with lung cancer undergoing surgery have consistently shown benefits with respect to physical and emotional functioning.1 Nevertheless, until the present day, exercise training has not been consistently executed into clinical practice based on the fact that the cost of interventions is high and not aligned with clinical care.

Major Points/Findings:

Accordingly, the research found out that cancer constitutes to about 30%-50% of all cancer-related issues in patients.1 Moreover, the Surgical intervention in localized primary non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) helps improve the survival possibilities. Additionally, resection of isolated secondary lung cancer leads to enlarged progression-free. Hence, patients with lung cancer at the preoperative and postoperative settings establish improvement in physical performance, cardiorespiratory fitness and hospital length of stay.

Limitations of Research:

The limitation with this is that it was the first Programme for patients with primary and secondary lung cancer. Besides, the cost of the behavioral intervention conducted by a physical therapist for weekly phone calls during the outpatient’s period tends to be high for future implementation in healthcare settings. 

Application to Your Practice of Respiratory Therapy and/or the overall impact on the field of Respiratory Care:

In relation to my practice of respiratory therapy, the PEP study helps test the clinical effectiveness and feasibility of a personalized exercise intervention on patients with lung cancer undergoing surgery.1 It thus gives a good overview of the importance as to why we should offer cancer treatment to the patient hence improving the whole perspective of respiratory care in my working place.
