Long-term oxygen therapy 24 vs 15 h/day and mortality in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. PLoS One, 11(9), e0163293. https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0 163293 Article 2 Lacasse, Y., Bernard, S., Sériès, F., Bourbeau, J., Aaron, S., & Maltais, F. (2017). Multi-center, randomized, placebo-controlled trial of nocturnal oxygen therapy in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: a study protocol for the INOX trial. BMC pulmonary medicine, 17(1), 8. https://bmcpulmmed.biomedcentral.co m/articles/10.1186/s12890-016-0343- 9 Point Description Description Broad Topic Area/Title Comparison between Long-term oxygen therapy (LTOT) 24 h/day and LTOT 15 h/day on mortality rates in hypoxemic COPD. The effect of the nocturnal oxygen intervention undertaken for 3 years on mortality rates or prescription of LTOT. Define Hypotheses This study hypothesized that LTOT did not have an effect on the mortality rated in all cause, cardiovascular and respiratory cases in hypoxemic COPD. In this study, it was hypothesized that nocturnal oxygen intervention undertaken for 3 years running does not affect the longevity of survival of COPD or delay the prescription of the LTOT interventions. Define Independent and Dependent Variables and Types of Data for Variables Independent variable: Effectiveness of LTOT-24 h/day and LTOT -15 h/day in all causes, cardiovascular and respiratory cases Dependent variables: improved adjusted survival time in LTOT-24 h/day and LTOT -15 h/day. Independent variable: Effectiveness of supplemental oxygen intervention during sleep in COPD patients Dependent variable: Mortality rates, delayed LTOT and COPD patient life quality 2 Data types included: patient age, gender, prescribed oxygen dose, PaCO2 (air), Forced Expiratory Volume-1 second (FEV1), body mass index, WHO performance status, oral glucocorticoids and comorbidity. Data included mortality rates, quality of life, utility measures, intervention cost-effectiveness and oxygen therapy compliance. Population of Interest for the Study Patients with COPD under LTOT 24 h/day and LTOT 15 h/day. Patients with COPD under supplemental oxygen intervention during sleep in LTOT Sample This study around 2239 hypoxemic COPD patients of which 59% of this population were women. The study incorporated 600 individual who were diagnosed with past history of obstructive disease and smoking, forced expiratory volume in around 27 universities all based in Portugal, Spain, France and Canada. Sampling Method Randomized sampling Multi-center randomize sampling method How Were Data Collected? This data was retrieved from the National Registrar for Respiratory Failure. Data was retrieved by use of the standardized case report forms.
