Improving The Backhand in Tennis
I chose to find an article on improving the backhand in tennis. The reason I chose this is
because the backhand is the weakest part of my game. I can serve pretty well, have a good lob and
drop shot, and my forehand is strong with a lot of spin on the ball. I have always struggled with
my backhand and I am not exactly sure why. But, after reading this article, it really helped me out
and gave me some great tips that I can’t wait to try out. I usually hit my backhand with two hands
on the racket and if I really have to reach for the ball, I will extend my right hand out.
My backhand is not nearly as strong as my forehand, and in this article I read, it talks about
tips that can give you a stronger backhand, which is really what I want. The article talks about
how preparation is very important when hitting the backhand shot and that you want to recognize
where the ball is going early so you can get a head start on the ball’s flight pattern. The article
talks about when to use a one-handed or two-handed backhand shot. I have been wanting to get
better on my backhand slice and the article talks about this. It says “to prepare for the backhand
slice shot, bend your racket arm. This bending motion is important because the efficiency of your
slice backhand depends on the magnitude of your arm extension. If you want to increase the
effectiveness of your shot, adjust your shot by extending your arm a bit late or extend it just
seconds before the point of contact (optimum tennis).” Also, my shots go long a lot of the time on
my backhand and the article helped me by saying to check my grip because there is probably a
problem with the angle of the racket at the point of contact with the ball.
This article was very helpful to me on improving my backhand. It gave so many useful tips
on how I can make my backhand shot better. I’m very excited to get back out on the tennis court
so I can practice what I learning in this article.
