Your assignment:
Visit a virtual gallery or museum and choose a work of art to critique. Visually analyze the work of art and critique it based on the visual elements of art (line, shape, color, etc. – use your lecture notes and Chapter 4), principles of design (rhythm, composition, balance, etc. – use your lecture notes and Chapter 5), subject matter, content, and function. What is the medium? Who is the artist? What is the title and what was the date when it was created?
Next, choose a work of art we have studied in class, or a work of art from your textbook, and conduct a visual analysis of it. Include the visual elements (line, shape, color, texture, etc.), principles of design (rhythm, composition, balance, etc.), function, subject matter, and content. What is the medium? Who is the artist? What is the title and what was the date when it was created? Compare your virtual art gallery or museum choice with the work you choose from class. Describe why it is an interesting comparison – the works of art must have something in common, whether it is the subject matter, the content, the medium, the artist, or the function. Use at least 5 vocabulary words from lecture and/or your textbook to describe the work of art at the gallery or museum and 5 vocabulary words to describe the other work of art from lecture/textbook. This exercise is intended for you to apply concepts and vocabulary learned in class to a work of art in a gallery or museum. Go look at some works of art and enjoy yourself!
Points Possible: 100
Format: Papers must be 5-7 pages, double-spaced, with one inch margins around, using Times New Roman font size 12. If you use Chicago Manual of Style, the cover page (not counted in the number of pages) must include your name, instructor’s name, title of the class, due date, and title of the paper. If using MLA style, please include your name, instructor’s name, class title, and due date in upper left corner of first page. Please include an illustration page at the end of your paper with both works of art displayed.
Remember: No plagiarism (refer to your syllabus). Also remember to choose your work of art carefully. Choose a work that will lend itself to analysis. Include the title, date, artist, and medium of your chosen art gallery or museum work of art and the title, date, artist, and medium of your chosen textbook/lecture work of art at the beginning of the paper. Always underline or italicize the title and use the artist’s last name when referring to him/her. Consider choosing a work of art at the gallery or museum that is similar in formal elements, design principles, subject matter, or content to the work of art you choose from lecture or the textbook. This will allow you much room for comparison. Also note the differences between the two works as well.
Grading will be based on your ability to apply concepts and vocabulary learned in class to a work of art in a gallery or museum. The work can be of any medium or time period. Use an objective voice throughout the paper. Do not use “I” or “We” liked the work. Instead, be objective and describe how the elements of the work created an overall sense. For example, if you write about Piet Mondrian’s Composition with Red, Blue, and Yellow, you could write: “The black vertical and horizontal rectilinear lines, painted on a white background, create an orderly effect. Furthermore, the highly saturated primary colors of red, blue, and yellow add interest to the otherwise grid-like, monochromatic palette, etc., etc.” Do not write: “I like the red, yellow, and blue colors and the straight lines. They make it feel orderly.” Or, about Van Gogh’s Self-Portrait with a Bandaged Ear, you could write, “In his self-portrait, the artist’s eyes do not seem to focus on anything in particular, but instead, stare off into the distance. This creates a feeling of sadness. He sits alone in a room, which is empty, save for a print on the wall. The texture of his green coat looks coarse, due to the artist’s sketchy brushstrokes and short, quickly-painted lines. The image is one of loneliness and isolation, etc, etc.” Do not write, “Van Gogh’s face looks sad. His coat looks old and rough. He looks isolated.” Thoughtfully consider the work of art in terms of visual elements and design principles; pick it apart to thoroughly describe it and describe the content (feelings evoked). Use the handout “Asking Questions to Get Answers.”
Grading:
*Visual Analysis of your chosen work from a gallery or museum. Compare the works based on the Visual Elements of Art, Design Principles, Subject Matter, Function, and Content. How are they similar? How are they different? How does this affect the content? POINTS: 20
*Vocabulary (five words for each image) from lecture and/or the textbook (do not simply define the vocabulary word, but incorporate it into a sentence to describe the work of art at the gallery or museum; use bold font when you type your vocabulary words): 20 points
*Format (did you format the paper properly? Refer to format section above): 5 points
*Composition of paper (is there a beginning, a body, and a conclusion? Did you use complete sentences and correct grammar?): 5 points
