Questions:
1. In Representing the Race (Critical Issues pp. 215-227), Donna Graves argues that “the monumental tradition itself is to essentialize and distill the historical record, an inclination that can all too often lead to distorted understandings of the past and present.” Pick any memorial and illustrate how it proves or disproves her statement.
2. Many art scholars consider mural art to be the only truly democratic art. Argue why this is true or not true, using at least one mural example.
4. Explain how the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt spans the boundaries of concepts of art, community art, memorial, folk art, art therapy, and socially-engaged art. Why is this difficulty of category so powerful?
5. The title of our class is “Art in the Public Interest.” Based on the content of our class, why is the title not just “Public Art” instead? What is an example of art in the public interest?
6. User’s Choice: What did you learn in this class? Why is it meaningful to you, and how might it be useful to you in the future? NOTE: This question is likely the most difficult to answer, so please plan your response carefully.
