Museum Assignment Instructions
You will submit four separate documents as assignments in these assignment areas:
Step 1 - 3 Selected Image of Artwork Step 4 - Art Criticism . Step 5 - Oxford Online Reasearch Step 6 - Final Essay Paper

Step 1 - follow the instructions in the attached document to access the museum website and search for an artist/artwork
DO NOT select architecture. Your chosen artwork must have a verified artist - it cannot be unknown.
Step 2 – Select a work of art: Select a work of art that reflects an interest of yours (a hobby, animals, religion, sport, etc.) OR if you don't select an artwork for its content you need to select an artist whose last name starts with the same letter of your last name. Include the explanation for why you selected that image. Include the name of your artist.
ONCE YOU HAVE SELECTED YOUR ARTIST VERIFY THAT YOUR ARTIST CAN BE FOUND ON THE ENCYCLOPEDIA BRITANNICA ONLINE BEFORE PROCEDING WITH STEP 4 !! ***

Once you verified that your artist can be found on this site go to step 3.
NOTE: If you do not follow these requirements you will receive a zero for your submission. If you select because of your last name letter state that. If you select an image because it is of interest please explain why you selected that image!!
Step 3 – Download photo of work of your selected artwork: Once you have chosen your work of art download a image of that work. MUST BE A JPG OR PNG FILE FORMAT. You will submit the photograph in this assignment by posting it in the assignment area or attach it as a file. You can insert or include the image in the final paper. Include the explanation for why you selected that image.
Step 4 – Search Encyclopedia Britannica:
In this step you will locate a biographical sketch of your artist in the Encyclopedia Britannica database. For specific step by step instructions on this component, please refer to the Search Encyclopedia Britannica file attached. Do not access the OAO since it is not working - use this link:

Copy and paste the URL when you've located your artist and follow the instructions in the attached document to post that URL in the assignment in BlackBoard.
IF YOU CANNOT FIND THE ARTIST IN THE ENCYCLOPEDIA BRITANNICA YOU CANNOT USE THAT ARTIST.
Step 5 – Completed Art Analysis/Inquiry Worksheets: Attached is the worksheet with the guided questions to help you analyze and write about the work of art you selected. Complete the form and upload into the assignment area. For a quick introduction to the visual elements and principles of design review the attached doc.
Step 6 - Final Essay Paper
NOTE: Read the plagiarism posting on the Course Information tab. These submissions are checked for sources and if you plagiarize your submission you will receive a zero for all four parts of this assignment.
Step 6 – Final Essay Paper: The final typed paper should follow the guidelines of the MLA Formatting Guide link listed below and be a minimum of 2 to 3 pages in length. This is an essay so it should be constructed in the following manner:
Introduce your artwork and the artist. Summarize the biographical information you gathered in your Oxford Art Online search. 25 points
Use the completed Art Inquiry worksheet to construct at least one paragraph for each section of the four steps of art criticism: (description, interpretation, analysis and judgment). Summarize the information you gathered on the Art Analysis/Inquiry Worksheet in complete sentences (DO NOT LIST THE ITEMS – Summarize!). 25 points
Finalize your essay with a summary of what you discovered in your research. Consider the following points: 25 points
Were you familiar with this artist or not?
How did the Oxford Art search inform and enhance your understanding of the artist – what was the most interesting thing(s) you discovered about this artist?
How did employing the methodology of the art inquiry process inform and enhance your understanding of the formal issues of the art work?
Was the initial interest in the subject matter or artist enhanced by this process of inquiry giving you a better understanding of the creative process, compositional elements, and historical context – this could be a yes or no - and explain why.
4. Include a works cited page, with a correct citation formatting, to cite your reference sources. 25 points

The final document must be a Microsoft Word .docx file format. If you do not have Microsoft Word you can download it for free – on the log in page of Blackboard on the right hand side are instructions for obtaining a free download. No other file formats will be accepted. Format your paper using 1” margins, set to Times New Roman, 12 point font. You should properly cite the Oxford Art Online article and any other material that you reference. Refer to the How to cite a work of art FAQ which can be found under the Course Information tab in Blackboard.
