PEERS RESPONSE:

This week I chose to discuss the architecture of The Potala Palace which is beautifully built into a hillside with an amazing mountain view behind it. The Potala Palace was established in 1645 as a spiritual and governmental center for Tibetan Buddhism until the fourteenth Dalai Lama fled for political refuge in 1959” (Sachant et al, 2016, Section 7.3). Built for the main purpose to be a Buddhist monastery. The palace has many structures that are combines to make one gigantic structure that is filled with many rooms to compensate different things from living areas to libraries, and halls, and chapels. It has visual representation of leaders and words of wisdom and encouragement. “The buildings are constructed of wood and stone and are outstanding examples of the Tibetan Buddhist style, with influences from China, India, and Nepal” (UNESCO). This structure was used in many religious events and the signing of many political agreements. The importance of the use of this property during times of much needed thought, prayer, and discussion adds to the importance of this property to history. According to Sachant et al. (2016), “architecture can be used as a means of bringing together a group of people with like beliefs or views and emphasizing what they have in common” (section 6.5). This structure was able to be used as a place for worship for the Buddhist monks where they were able to come together and spiritually be together.
