What to do BEFORE writing your Art 206 paper:

Research Artist

· DO NOT USE WIKIPEDIA.

· Find at least 3 credible sources from the approved sources below (that include the following information: art movement associated with your artist, birth date and place of birth, death date--if there is one, education, artistic influences, career, and any interesting facts about your artist)

· Living With Art (Our Class Textbook)

· Official Museum Websites, such as the Met, Tate, Smithsonian, MOMA, etc.

· An Artist’s official website

· Interviews with your artist

· Art 21 website

· To get to the following sources, go BPCC’s Library Home Page, scroll down to student links, click on “subject guides”, click on “art and art history”, click on “find resources”.

· Journal Articles from BPCC’s online databases

· Books from BPCC’s art collection

Analyze Favorite Artwork

· Look up multiple artworks by your artist, and pick out your number 1 favorite. Then use the following tips to analyze it. This step will help you write the majority of your paper later.

· You will need an image of your favorite artwork as well as the title, medium/materials used, size, and year (if available).

· Describe the subject matter of your favorite artwork (include the type: non-objective, abstract, or realistic – from Ch. 2). Describe what you visually see in it, no context yet.

· Then list all of the visual elements (Ch. 4) and principles of design (Ch. 5) in your artwork. Remember to describe where in the image you see each visual element and principle of design. Use very specific terms. For example, you could use organic shape, but cannot just say shape, in general.

· List any context or meaning behind your favorite artwork after reading information about it through interviews with your artist, her artist statement (usually found on her website), and/or museums that have exhibited it.

How to WRITE your Art 206 paper:

· Review my example paper in Canvas to help you understand the MLA format and content expected in your paper. Also Google “Purdue OWL + MLA format” for a great source on the paper format. Pay particular attention to in-text citations and the Works Cited page (most mistakes are made with these).

· Create a Word document in MLA format, and start your paper. It should include the following paragraphs:

· Intro Paragraph

· Artist Biography Paragraph (1-2 paragraphs)

· Birth date and place of birth, Death date (if there is one), Education and Artistic Influences, Career and Art Movement Associated with your Artist, Any Interesting Facts about your Artist

· Favorite Artwork Analysis Paragraphs

· Subject Matter (1 paragraph)

· Visual Elements & Principles of Design (1-2 paragraphs)

· Context (1 paragraph)

· Conclusion Paragraph

· Double check that any researched info included inside your paper has an in-text citation (even paraphrased) and put quotation marks around any direct quotes (copy/pasted, word for word).

· Create a Works Cited page in MLA format - check Purdue OWL (and attach to the end of your paper)

· Make sure the sources are complete, in the proper format, and in alphabetical order

· Create an artwork page (attach to your paper after your Works Cited page)

· Copy and paste a good image of your favorite artwork. Underneath it put a citation (Fig. 1: Type your artist’s full name, then type your artwork’s title italicized). When you first mention the artwork in your paper, you will create the in-text citation (see fig. 1).
