Douglas was a committed  abolitionist (Links to an external site.) , which meant he supported the ending of slavery. Though he was known for his landscapes, he painted portraits of abolitionists. He also helped James Ball create a large anti-slavery  panorama (Links to an external site.) , a type of painting in the form of a circle that is meant to surround the viewer, who stands in the middle. Though his paintings were not often overt in their expressions against slavery, many scholars argue that one can find such content.  For example, the descriptions of the paintings on this website show us how we might be able to find abolitionist ideas.
