3)  What are we actually being shown? What stands out the most?

We are actually being shown the finding of baby Moses in the story from the bible. What stands out the most to me is the crying child. He looks in distress and the women surrounding him seem kind of lost. Also, the dwarf man that’s leaning tugging on the, fancier looking lady, looks very devilish and kind of scary.

4) How does the artist use space? Which perspective? How does he employ color and light?

The artist uses space by using two-dimensional characters. I don’t think any of the theatrical characters jump out, but each plays a role in his painting. The artist uses a one-point perspective, I believe his main purpose is to draw attention the baby Moses. Battista employs color and light by using the dark background, which contrasts with the yellow dress of the women in the middle of the painting. The painting is almost monochromatic.

3) What are we actually being shown? What stands out the most?

I believe the artist was showing us a representation of liberty, specifically women’s freedom from the patriarchy and the French Revolution. The woman stands out the most, she seems fearless and determined.

4) How does the artist use space? Which perspective? How does he employ color and light?

The artist uses space through a two-dimensional painting. The perspective of this painting is one point, since the focal point is the woman. It’s meant to direct the viewer to the woman. Nanine Vallain uses dark colors to contrast the woman in the center. The woman has very fair skin contrast with her simple blue/brown dress. Also, the bright red hat stands out because it is the only pure red used in the painting.
