Essay 4: Long Research Paper /Argumentation
Objective: Write a coherent, organized, and adequately developed paper that uses argument and analysis to establish and support the student’s position on an issue.
Directions: Now that your argument is clear (after writing Essay 3), and the framework is established, support the claim with “expert’s” supporting evidence.
Suggested Steps:
1. Before one begins research for an essay, on must select a relevant and meaning topic. Select a topic from the Opposing Viewpoints Database/Gale.
2. Familiarize yourself with the databases and articles. Select scholarly, journal articles or credible newspapers or periodicals.
3. Write the argument. Integrate sources so they support your position. 80% of the paper should be your wording / 20% may be supporting quotes.
4. Refer to the rubric as you write.
REQUIREMENTS: Your thesis MUST be clear and concise.
1. The paper must be 4-6 pages in length.
2. All sources must come from Databases unless you have approval to use other sources.
3. The paper must contain at least 5 in-text citations/5 sources listed on the Works Cited. Two paraphrases required (must be cited).
4. The paper, must conform to MLA guidelines outlined in the writer’s handbook. Please review and study MLA formatting in your HANDBOOK, all of it--the heading, the title, the body, quotes, block quotes, the work cited page, etc.--and make sure your paper is formatted in the same way. Significant deviation from this format will result in a substantially lowered grade.

Introduction: 1-2 Paragraphs
These paragraphs include an introduction with three-point thesis; begin with general background information and move to specific. You may include counter-argument.
Body Paragraphs
2-3 Paragraphs on point 1 / support the thesis
2-3 Paragraphs on point 2 / support the thesis
2-3 Paragraphs on point 3 / support the thesis
Closing/Conclusion: 1-2 Paragraphs to bring closure to the essay
