Argumentative Research Topic/Idea Proposal

Name the topic of your argumentative research paper.  In order to be most efficient, please refer to the list of ten previously accepted topic ideas and the guidelines for topics.  If you are not selecting one from the list, make sure that you are considering your topic along these lines to ensure it will be an acceptable controversial issue for this paper.   This is due on Wednesday, July 7th for five points.  

 

Please respond to the following questions. 

1.  What is your idea or topic?

 

2.  Explain as best you can how the topic is controversial. 

 

3.  What do you know about the other side?

1.  My topic is about the cochlear implant.

 

2.  In the Deaf community, the cochlear implant is controversial.  Many people who are deaf consider the implant intrusive and unnecessary.  They feel like the implant gives the wrong impression about people who are deaf, specifically that they are incomplete or handicapped.  Deaf people do not consider themselves handicapped.  They don’t feel they need to be fixed.  They think the cochlear implant is oppressive and unnecessary. 

 

3.  The other side of the issue probably includes people who mean well and just want a deaf person to participate in society.  To most hearing people, it probably seems odd that the cochlear implant is even controversial.  It seems like modern medical technology that should be utilized.
