RWS 305W Argument Assignment Choose an issue that is currently being debated in the field that you plan to enter when you graduate—something that might affect you personally, either directly or indirectly. The academic journals that are produced by professional organizations in your field would be a good source for topics. Read as much background information as you can on the topic: news articles, editorials, columns, letters to the editor, websites, and journal articles. Decide what your position is on this issue, and write a persuasive argument that supports your position with compelling evidence. Organize your paragraphs around sub-claims that are supported with researched evidence. Use the argument appeals (ethos, pathos, and logos) to persuade. Pay attention to your use of transitions to guide your reader from one sub-claim or idea to the next. Include at least one context link between two paragraphs—see the handout on Blackboard. See the “Citing Sources in Arguments” handout for instruction on how to identify a source publication without using a “Works Cited” page. Your argument should be 1000 words and block formatted (single space, don’t indent the first line of the paragraph, and skip a line between paragraphs). Put just the title, which is usually a statement of your argument, at the top left of the first page. This editorial will be evaluated using the following Criteria for Evaluation:

1. Does this argument introduce a controversial issue that could affect the author’s future or current career and clearly identify his or her position on the conflict?

2. Are paragraphs organized around sub-claims that support the author’s position with persuasive research?

3. Does the argument present sub-claims in an order that helps to compel readers to support its position and use transitions (including one context link), when necessary, to guide its reader from one claim to another?

4. Does the argument identify and successfully counter at least one opposing viewpoint? 5. Has the argument been edited for grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors to the extent

that it would be acceptable in a professional environment? Important: Students frequently use outside source material to provide support for assertions being made in an Argument. Consequently, this assignment is particularly vulnerable to plagiarism (often unintentional, but very serious nonetheless). In the Turnitin Document Viewer, click on the Originality Tab at the top left. The originality score represents the percentage of your document that Turnitin determines has come from another source, but has not been properly documented. You can ignore aberrations, such as document titles or short phrases. However, if the text of an entire sentence (or more) has been highlighted, this must be properly attributed (or paraphrased) or you will be asked to submit a corrected version, which will incur a late penalty.
