· Revision of argument paper due Wednesday 2/20 with 3-4 copies for in-class group
Instruction and outcomes:
Genre: Arguably the most important and common genre of writing in college, academic argument seeks truth by closely examining evidence and counter-argument. Different disciplines examine different types of evidence to answer different questions; thus, they have different requirements for acceptable evidence. An academic argument differs from simpler persuasive essays by presenting a more complex or nuanced thesis and more thorough development. When seeking “The Truth,” we examine things very critically.
Argument paper instructions and expectations:
1. Your goals for this paper are to:
a. Persuade your audience through effective use of evidence and rhetoric
b. Write, analyze, and improve your arguments using skills developed in class
c. Work on organization, flow, and transitions to smoothly and convincingly pull your reader along with you every step of the way
d. Take risks with your writing and explore different elements of argument
e. Continue to appropriately and smoothly incorporate sources
2. Give adequate context and background, but don’t overdo it. Give the reader enough background knowledge to understand your evidence, but you don’t need to reproduce the Literature Review!
3. Sources: You may narrow your sources from the Literature Review, but:
a. Use a minimum of four sources
b. Use mainly scholarly sources
c. You might step back into research mode to:
i. Develop counterarguments
ii. Survey opinion and perspectives better
iii. Fill a hole in your evidence
4. Length: You will need at least four pages, double spaced. While generally shorter than the Literature Review paper, successful logic and evidence still takes a number of pages to fully develop.
5. Citation format: Cite using a consistent format that is common for the discipline of your major (or proposed major).
6. Peer review: You will provide (and receive) peer feedback on your first draft.
7. About revision: We will analyze and rewrite your paper, then conference (in writing group) on your revision. This is a major paper, so it requires multiple revisions and must meet C2 outcomes.
