The story I chose to analyze for discussion is "Araby" by James Joyce. I analyzed this story because of the simplicity the author portrays, and the plot of the story was much appealing. The narrator of the story that was unnamed throughout the story and the Mangan's sister to whom he fell in love but feel like he couldn't tell her about his feelings. The short story by James is portraying the theme of traditional love stories where lovers often feel hesitation in expressing themselves in front of each other. The interesting thing for me in this story was the way the narrator tried to see Mangan's sister, wait for her in the street and trying his best to bring best for her. While reading this story, I imagined the scene as when the author talks about street lights and games they played in the street.

The negative point or the thing that I don't found positive in the story was its ending. It was quite hopeless the way the narrator gave up on his feelings. The Araby, a Dublin Bazar, is used to symbolize feelings of the narrator who thinks like the flashing lights of Bazar his love for Mangan's sister will also fade and it is a fantasy that will never become a reality. But I think that was not about Araby or could be related to it. The narrator, instead of putting his efforts, assume things and consequences by himself that make him feel hopeless. The story would be more interesting and appealing if the narrator shares his feelings with Mangan's sister (Joyce, 1914).
