Why Michigan?

Arabs started coming to Michigan in the late 19th century.

The first wave was made up of mostly Lebanese and Syrian Christians, who worked largely as grocers and peddlers

Arab immigration really took off at the start of the 20th century

Detroit’s auto industry drew immigrants from all over

Auto industry declined but Detroit area had already become center for Arab America

As the Middle East suffered ongoing hardship, people kept leaving and coming to Michigan

“Muslim attire, particularly those who do not provide information to counteract stereotypes about their religious identity, face obstacles to employment,” (Ahmad, King 2010).

“Applicants who appeared to be Muslim is similar to that encountered by gay (Hebl et al., 2002), obese (King et al., 2006), and pregnant (Hebl et al., 2007) individuals,” (Ahmad, King 2010).

1875 Arab immigration to the United States begins in significant numbers

1876 Philadelphia hosts the Centennial Exposition. Many Arab merchants arrive and end up staying.

1899 The U.S. Bureau of Immigration acknowledges that most of the increasing flow of “Turks from Asia” are Arabs from Syria and adds the classification “Syrian”

1907 Syrians win a case against a judge who denied citizenship to a Syrian, claiming that Syrians belong to the “yellow race”
