Read Keith Erickson's Essay on the visual turn in presidential politics and then answer the following questions:
What are the challenges and opportunities (e.g. positives and negatives) associated with what Erickson calls the visual turn in presidential rhetoric? For leaders? For followers? For democracy? Offer at least 2 challenges or opportunities in total in your response and be sure to detail why these are positives or negatives and what that impact might be. (This will be about a paragraph or 2)
Erickson’s call at the end of the essay is to us as both critics and citizens – Erickson asks us to be aware of and evaluate these performance fragments and ask hard questions about their purpose, their efficacy (effectiveness), their ethics, and their persuasive impact so that we become more critical consumers of these visual narratives of leadership. Think about an example of a performance fragment recently (this could be something from a local, national, or international leader) and then do the work that Erickson is asking - ask and answer the questions regarding purpose, effectiveness, ethics, persuasive impact of the example you've chosen. (This will be several paragraphs)
Finally, given Erickson's challenge to us as critics and citizens how else might we be more critically engaged with our leaders performance fragments? What can you do specifically to answer Erickson's challenge?
