APPLIED PROJECT
Please note that I did an internship work, and I am asked to describe what I did in my internship and then relate what I learned in my ISS (Integrative Social Sciences) classes to my internship.
Details about my internship:
The internship is for the Municipality of Al Ain City in the UAE. The work I did for them is just basically office work where I collect resources for them. I met with them regularly and upon talking, they asked me to write a 25 pages paper and we agreed the topic to be about income inequality in the US society since I am studying here in the US. After finishing my paper, I made a PowerPoint presentation and presented it to them. Everything went well and it got approved by them and I also attached the paper internship + PPT for your reference.
Here is what my committee members asked me to do for my applied project proposal:
1) Description of internship, with specific details about your work (what is meant by work here is the 25 pages paper I wrote)
2) A list of your classes with a brief description of what you learned in each class that helps you in your internship.
CLASS #1: ISS 501
In this class, we had two assignments, a research proposal a literature review for the study I have proposed (the one from research proposal). The details of these assignments are posted below, and the completed assignments are attached.
Assignment 1 prompt:
Research Study Proposal
Worth 50% of Your Final Grade
Begin to develop a social science research project proposal. For this assignment, detail:
1) Your topic for the study and the key research questions that will lead to your hypothesis.
2) The Hypothesis of your proposed study.
3) What are the variables in your hypothesis? Which are dependent and independent, and how do you expect to operationalize the variables in your study.
4) Do you expect your project to be a large-n regression style study or a small-n case-study style of project. Also, will your project be largely quantitative, qualitative, or a combination of both. Additionally, what is the expected number of cases in your proposed study and how you will find/engage these cases.
5) The scope conditions of your proposed study.
6) Whether and how your study will be falsifiable.
7) Whether your research process and theory analysis will be largely deductive, inductive, or a combination of both.
8) The Level of Analysis of your proposed study.
9) The Unit of Analysis of your proposed study.
10) Your hopes for counter-intuitive findings.
ADDITIONALLY – Provide 5 citations, each being a quality, peer-reviewed, published, evidence-based, data-driven, research study that will potentially be an important source for your proposed study.
Assignment 2 prompt:
· In Assignment One you proposed a hypothesis with independent variables, a dependent variable, and scope conditions; along with an operationalization of a research design including proposed cases at a certain unit of analysis. For Assignment Two you will now compose a literature review for the study you have proposed. The literature review should read like a professionalized and publishable literature review. Let your hypothesis guide your inclusions while situating the study within the literature with a heightened focus on establishing why the study should be considered important. Be sure to use in your literature review as much methodological language that you have been learning in class as possible and reasonable. Your Literature Review should be 20-25 double spaced pages in length and include at least 15 relevant, cited, and ‘used within the text of your lit review’ peer-reviewed publications. Chicago manual of style citation format is preferred. APA is also acceptable.
CLASS #2: ISS 512
In this class, we had four assignments, the four required assignments are explained in the attached syllabus. I attached the completed assignment in case you would like to use or reference them in connection to what we learned in this course.
CLASS #3: ISS 514
Professor Alister, this class is one of the classes you did work for. You did module notes by answering prompt questions, locating articles, and doing a 4-5 slides presentation about that article. I posted some examples of the modules notes, located articles, and presentations. I was thinking that for this class we can say it helped us greatly prepare how to do a presentation for the internship paper and how to locate academic articles and source them correctly.
CLASS #4: ISS 518
In this class, we had only one long term paper and the prompt of it is available in the syllabus. If you need the paper I wrote, let me know but I believe you don’t need it because you are writing about what have you learned int this class that aligned in connection with my internship.
