Applied Ethical Case Scenario

As part of understanding professional ethics, each student will apply an ethical decision-making model to the noted case scenario below. As part of the process, students will not only utilize the ethical decision-making model but also review the National Organization for Human Services (NOHS) ethics code and include standards that apply to the case scenario. The NOHS code can be viewed here: http://www.nationalhumanservices.org/ethical-standards-for-hs-professionals.

The decision model will be based on the Corey decision-making model introduced in the course and will be included as part of the write-up for this applied case scenario. Students will write in paragraph form of possible responses for each numbered item.

Scenario

Vanessa is in the final semester of her human services program, and as part program requirements, she will complete a 150-hour internship with a human services organization called Lake City Caregiving (LCC) that works with high functioning autistic persons. Although these persons are high functioning, they still require living skills assistance for semi-autonomous living (living on their own but still needing help). LCC receives government-related grants to support their efforts and has an agreed upon working relationship with Vanessa’s school to provide internship opportunities for students.

Vanessa is excited about working with LCC as her older sister benefitted from an organization like LCC as she has high functioning autism. At the start of the semester, Vanessa’s excitement was evident as she was interested in learning about every facet of the organization. Because of Vanessa’s excitement, LCC’s director describes her as the ideal intern and even considers offering Vanessa a position upon internship completion which excites Vanessa even more.

About halfway through her internship, Vanessa noticed some peculiarities within LCC such as how client records seemed similar to one another. She noticed a pattern of record-keeping in which there was similar language throughout many client records wherein it seemed things were simply copied and pasted with only changing client names and other pertinent information. She also learned from other employees how they were told by their supervisors that they needed clients to sign new paperwork and backdate their information to their start date with LCC although the clients signed similar paperwork previously. What she heard was the previous paperwork was missing required information as LCC needed to update their information due to learning about an upcoming audit by the government. She also heard that employees voiced concern about having to redo paperwork as it takes time away from working with their clients.

Vanessa grew concerned over what she noticed on her own and also what she learned from other employees. Her excitement soon waned and is unsure of what next steps to take related to what she learned.

Based on the above scenario, answer each numbered item in paragraph form. Also, APA is not required for this assignment. Use this document to write out your answers below and submit this whole document including the above/below information.

Use the experience from course materials and assignments about ethical processes, and carefully think through the scenario applying what is appropriate for each of the steps. Show through your bullet point statements that you have thought through the case and reached a potentially logical conclusion based on your thought processes themselves. NOTE: Think of this scenario is its current situation and how it should be addressed based on the ethical decision-making model below and not what should have been done prior to the dilemma.

Ethical Decision-Making Model

1. Identify the problem(s) or dilemma(s)

2. Identify the potential issues involved

3. Review the relevant ethics codes (and organizational policies). For this section, identify 3-5 codes from the NOHS code what standards apply and briefly share why they apply. This step is more about identifying the standard and sharing why it relates, and you are allowed to use ones utilized in prior case studies.

4. Know the applicable laws and regulations. (Think about what laws and regulations might apply to this situation. Go with your gut on this as it applies.)

5. Obtain consultation. (Who should Vanessa speak with and why this person or persons?)

6. Consider possible and probable courses of action. (Think of potential steps to take with the scenario.)

7. Enumerate the consequences of various decisions. (Think about the impact of such steps and who might be impacted and what might happen.)

8. Choose what appears to be the best course of action and share why this is the best course of action.
