APPLICATION REPORT #3: Nonverbal Communication

Purpose: The purpose of the application reports is to assess students’ understanding of course concepts and for students to apply concepts to their own lives. The purpose of this specific report is to reflect on how nonverbal communication is used in our communication with others.

Logistics: This report is due at the end of the week. This report should be in its final draft, including the following requirements: at least TWO full pages, but no more than four, typed in Times New Roman font, double-spaced, and 1-inch margins.

Question/Assignment: Please answer the following questions:

1. Of the various forms of nonverbal communication discussed in your textbook, describe two of the styles/forms that you use the most: facial displays, eye behaviors, movement/gestures, touch, vocalics, smell, space, physical appearance, time, and artifacts. What accounts for the behaviors you use? Were they learned, or do they serve a practical purpose?

2. Describe a time that these behaviors helped improve an interaction or situation. Detail exactly what occurred that improved communication between you and other individual, or group of people. Then, describe a time when these behaviors made communicating with others difficult or caused miscommunication. Detail how these behaviors caused potential problems and what you had to do to rectify the situation.

3. Which of form of communication is more important to you: verbal or nonverbal communication? Or, do we need both in order to be the most effective communicator we can be?

Do not forget to include your own examples/experiences, references to the textbook, and/or media examples to illustrate your points.
